The armed man arrested at President Donald Trump’s California golf course earlier this month, was found with a dossier containing first lady Melania Trump’s daily schedule, detailed information about U.S. Secret Service (USSS) personnel, and sketches of Trump’s golf course, according to reports.
Jeanine John Taele, a decorated U.S. Marine veteran from Downey, California, was arrested on August 2 at Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, days before President Donald Trump was scheduled to attend a Republican National Committee dinner there.
Taele, 38, appeared before Judge John Lonergan on Wednesday dressed in a suicide smock for the preliminary hearing in Los Angeles, where prosecutors revealed new details about his arrest.
Taele first drew the attention of authorities on July 31, when he was spotted walking the grounds wearing an earpiece and taking photographs and video of security preparations.
He returned to the course on August 2 and told federal agents he worked for the State Department and had been assigned to a security detail, prosecutors said. He also allegedly told them he had a loaded firearm in his pickup truck in the club parking lot.
He was previously charged in Los Angeles Superior Court with firearms-related crimes and a 2025 robbery and was granted $250,000 bail in that case, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli.
Sheriff’s deputies reportedly detained Taele after learning about the robbery case and found a 16-round magazine containing hollow-point ammunition in his pants pocket during a pat-down.
A search of his vehicle revealed a loaded 9mm pistol, binoculars, and a fake badge reading “security protection agent.” A subsequent search of his Downey home uncovered an “illegally modified AR-platform rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, other firearms, body armor, high-capacity magazines, an earpiece, bulk ammunition, two radio signal devices, and multiple notebooks containing concerning statements,” the Department of Justice said in a press release on August 4.
“Anyone with that amount of firepower around the President poses a serious threat,” Essayli told the New York Post after Taele’s arrest.
Trump shrugged off the security scare, telling Fox News on August 4, it comes with the territory.
“The only thing I get a little solace from is they say only consequential presidents, and I am definitely consequential,” Trump told Fox News host Trace Gallagher.
Taele had seven notebooks with 208 pages of preparatory groundwork, including drawings and sketches of the golf course, lists of Secret Service members and their schedules, copies of Melania Trump’s schedule, and information about “going off the grid,” prosecutors said.
Los Angeles County Judge Lonergan said the allegations against Taele were “alarming in this day and age with the violence that is creeping into our everyday lives especially with the partisanship with the political climate.”
Lonergan suspended criminal proceedings against Taele after a pretrial evaluation determined he was not mentally fit to stand trial, the Associated Press reported.
During the evaluation, Taele allegedly falsely claimed he had been a State Department official for 14 years.
The case was transferred to the Hollywood Mental Health Court, and Taele remains jailed until a hearing on September 9. His public defender, A.J. Bayne, noted that Taele is a decorated veteran with family support and cautioned against assuming his motives.
The 38-year-old served in the Marine Corps from March 2008 until March 2016, deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan and attaining the rank of corporal.
He was decorated with “two Marine Corps Good Conduct Medals, a Navy Unit Commendation, a National Defense Service Medal, and a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal,” according to the AP.
Taele was charged with several felonies including possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle and receiving a large-capacity magazine. He was also charged with carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle, a misdemeanor offense.
The FBI, the United States Secret Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the matter with assistance from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
