White House Blocks CNN, MS NOW and Politico Reporters After Trump Ban

Tevin McLeod - September 20, 2026

A dramatic White House threat issued one day earlier became an enforced reality Saturday morning when journalists arrived for work and discovered that their credentials no longer opened the gates.

The action affected reporters from three major news organizations, transforming an announcement that initially lacked operational details into a direct restriction on access to the presidential complex.

Journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico were denied entry to the White House grounds after President Donald Trump declared the outlets banned “effective immediately” over coverage he characterized as “Fake News.”

CNN senior White House reporter Betsy Klein said she attempted to enter Saturday morning and learned that her permanent White House press credential had been deactivated.

A Secret Service agent confiscated Klein’s badge at the entrance and referred her to the White House press office when she asked why her access had been removed.

CNN confirmed the access denial and said its journalists would continue covering the federal government despite efforts to restrict their physical access to government buildings.

“We have a right under the U.S. Constitution to do our reporting without hindrance or interference from the government,” CNN said in its statement.

MS NOW White House correspondent Akayla Gardner and a network photographer encountered a similar situation when they arrived at the complex Saturday.

Gardner said an officer told her that her badge had been disabled and requested that she surrender it, while explaining that the decision came from above him.

“I asked why I was not able to get inside,” Gardner said during a live report from outside the White House perimeter, adding that the officer responded, “It was above him.”

MS NOW said it intended to take any steps necessary to defend its First Amendment rights and the role of independent journalism.

Politico also confirmed that White House reporter Cheyenne Haslett was denied entry, completing enforcement against journalists from all three organizations named by Trump.

Trump had announced the ban Friday on Truth Social, accusing the three organizations of repeatedly publishing fiction and lies about him, his administration and the United States.

“Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow,” Trump wrote after naming CNN, MS NOW and Politico in the announcement.

The president later told reporters that no single article prompted the decision, describing it instead as the result of accumulated coverage over the previous two years.

“You get sick of it,” Trump said, while arguing that media organizations could publish what they wanted but did not have to receive White House access.

Saturday’s confiscated and disabled credentials supplied the clearest answer by preventing named reporters from entering the grounds where they ordinarily work.

The White House referred questions about the restrictions to Trump’s previous remarks rather than offering a separate explanation of the standards used to revoke the credentials.

The affected organizations contend that the government cannot selectively deny established press access because officials object to an outlet’s reporting or editorial viewpoint.

Trump and his defenders maintain that presidents have authority to manage access to limited White House spaces and should not be required to accommodate organizations they consider dishonest.

The dispute is likely to reach federal court, where the central question would be whether the restrictions represent permissible control of access or unconstitutional retaliation based on viewpoint.

Previous disputes involving the White House credentials of CNN correspondent Jim Acosta and Associated Press reporters resulted in court orders restoring at least some access, although the facts and procedural history differed.

For the three organizations targeted Friday, the controversy has now moved beyond a presidential warning: their journalists arrived Saturday and were physically prevented from entering the White House grounds.
