Trump’s sweet secret revealed: He loves pink starbursts and tootsie rolls

Tevin McLeod - May 20, 2025

It turns out President Donald Trump doesn’t just crave political victories — he’s got a serious sweet tooth, too. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt offered a peek into the president’s candy preferences during a mock briefing for children of journalists on Tuesday, part of the White House’s “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” festivities.

“He eats a good amount,” Leavitt said, smiling when asked how much candy Trump consumes daily. “He likes pink Starbursts and Tootsie Rolls.” The fun-filled Q&A touched on everything from candy to climate change.

When asked about Trump’s favorite meals, she added: “He likes to eat a big, beautiful steak, ice cream sundaes with chocolate sauce and some toppings, and hamburgers and fries from McDonald’s.”

While some children ventured into policy territory — asking about the border and climate issues — others took a more playful turn. One child posed the stumper of the day: Who is the president’s favorite child?

“That is a very controversial question and I’m not going to answer it,” Leavitt responded, drawing laughs. “I know he loves all of his children very much, and they’re all great kids.”

For one day, the White House gave its youngest guests a chance to ask the questions adults usually don’t — and got answers that left everyone smiling.

Meanwhile, President Trump made his own appearance outside the White House, where a video clip of him doing a playful dance with kids was later shared by a staffer on social media.

Trump and Melania Trump also held separate events of their own. Melania helped children decorate wooden American flags in the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden. She added a glittery touch with silver stars and complimented their creations as “beautiful.”
