Donald Trump jokingly called out Karoline Leavitt for not being able to get him good publicity. During a press conference at the Oval Office on Tuesday, the president joked that he should fire his White House press secretary.

“We have to straighten out our media,” Trump said, adding, “The New York Times circulation, you know, has gone way down. The Washington Post is almost extinct.” The president went on to call the papers “dishonest” and stated that “people don’t believe the media.” Trump referenced the media coverage of his 2024 presidential run that suggested that he was underperforming before his re-election.

“I got 93% bad publicity,” Trump recalled. “Some people say 97, but between 93 and 97,” he noted. Trump added, “A person that gets 97 percent—maybe Karoline’s doing a poor job, I don’t know,” pointing to the press secretary behind the camera. The president then joked, “She’s my representative. You’re doing a terrible job. Should we keep her? I think we’ll keep her.”

The comment drew a few light chuckles from across the room, implying that it was simply a lighthearted jab by the POTUS. Following the remark, Trump continued, “When you get 93 to 97 bad stories, bad press, and you win in a landslide, do you know what that says? People don’t believe the press.” He added, “And when people don’t believe the press, that’s a very bad thing for our country.”
