President Donald Trump has faced more known assassination attempts than any other U.S. president in modern history, according to an analysis of media reports and court records. The latest incident occurred Saturday at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington.
Authorities say at least six individuals have been apprehended since 2016 in connection with attempts on Trump’s life. That number could be higher when including plots disrupted in early stages, including threats linked to foreign actors and extremist groups, The Daily Caller News Foundation reported.
The Justice Department underscored the seriousness of the latest case involving suspect Cole Allen. Prosecutors warned that the alleged plot could have had far-reaching consequences given the number of senior officials present.

“Attempted murder is always a serious crime, but when the intended victim is the President of the United States… the potential consequences are far-reaching,” the department said in a court filing. Officials added the act could have destabilized the federal government.
Violence targeting U.S. presidents dates back to 1835, when Andrew Jackson survived an assassination attempt. Four presidents have been killed in office, but the volume and frequency of threats in recent years have raised new concerns about political violence.

One of the earliest incidents involving Trump occurred in June 2016, when Michael Sandford was arrested at a campaign rally in Nevada. Authorities said Sandford attempted to grab a police officer’s weapon and later admitted he had been planning to kill Trump.
Court records showed Sandford had practiced at a gun range the day before. He was later sentenced to one year in prison and released in 2017.
Months later, Gregory Leingang was arrested after authorities said he planned to use heavy machinery to attack Trump’s motorcade. Investigators determined he was experiencing a severe psychiatric episode at the time.
In 2020, federal agents intercepted a poison-laced letter sent to Trump. The package was traced to Pascale Ferrier, who was later sentenced to nearly 22 years in prison after pleading guilty.
Another case involved William Clyde Allen, who sent ricin-laced letters to Trump and other officials in 2018. Charges were eventually dropped after prosecutors determined he was suffering from mental illness.
The most serious attack came during a July 2024 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Gunman Thomas Crooks fired multiple shots from a rooftop, striking Trump in the ear and killing a supporter in the crowd.
The incident prompted widespread scrutiny of Secret Service protocols. Then-Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned following congressional hearings into security failures at the event.
In September 2024, Ryan Wesley Routh was arrested near Trump’s golf course in Florida after a Secret Service agent spotted him with a rifle. Investigators later said he had attempted to obtain weapons and was convicted on federal charges, receiving a life sentence.
Saturday’s incident at the Washington Hilton marked the latest alleged attempt. Authorities said Cole Allen entered the event armed with multiple weapons and fired at a Secret Service agent before being subdued.
The shooting has drawn renewed attention to security procedures at high-profile events attended by government officials. It has also intensified debate over the broader climate of political rhetoric and its potential impact.
Another lesser-known incident occurred months earlier at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. A man identified as Austin Martin was shot and killed by law enforcement after entering the property with a weapon. Investigators said his motive was unclear.
Trump himself has acknowledged the repeated threats against him. Speaking at the White House earlier this year, he referenced the ongoing danger.
“I don’t know how long I’ll be around. I got a lot of people gunning for me, don’t I?” he said.
Officials continue to investigate the most recent attack and assess security measures moving forward.
