Pam Bondi Reveals Private Cancer Battle After Leaving DOJ

Tevin McLeod - May 27, 2026

Former Attorney General Pam Bondi has reportedly been quietly battling thyroid cancer following her departure from the Department of Justice, according to a new report.

Bondi, 60, was diagnosed shortly after leaving the Justice Department in early April and has already undergone treatment, according to Axios, which cited a source familiar with the matter.

The report said Bondi is now recovering.

News of her diagnosis became public Tuesday evening after former White House staffer and podcast host Katie Miller shared the report on social media and offered an encouraging update.

“Pam has been quietly kicking cancer’s ass the last few weeks,” Miller wrote in a post on X.

Bondi’s diagnosis comes just weeks after President Donald Trump announced her departure as attorney general, praising her tenure at the Department of Justice and signaling she would soon move into a new role.

In his Truth Social announcement at the time, Trump praised Bondi’s service in emphatic terms.

“Pam did a tremendous job overseeing a massive crackdown in Crime across our Country, with Murders plummeting to their lowest level since 1900,” Trump wrote.

“We love Pam, and she will be transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future,” he added.

Bondi also addressed her departure publicly at the time, making clear she remained closely aligned with the administration.

“I remain eternally grateful for the trust that President Trump placed in me to Make America Safe Again,” Bondi wrote in a post on X confirming her exit.

“Over the next month I will be working tirelessly to transition the office of Attorney General to the amazing Todd Blanche before moving to an important private sector role I am thrilled about, and where I will continue fighting for President Trump and this Administration,” she added.

Bondi also reflected on her time leading the Justice Department.

“Leading President Trump’s historic and highly successful efforts to make America safer and more secure has been the honor of a lifetime, and easily the most consequential first year of the Department of Justice in American history,” she wrote.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche has served as acting attorney general since Bondi’s departure.

Despite stepping away from the Justice Department, Bondi appears poised to remain involved in public policy at a high level.

According to the Axios report, Bondi is expected to serve on the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

The council is co-chaired by White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks and White House science adviser Michael Kratsios.

In that role, Bondi is expected to help coordinate efforts between the federal government and private-sector technology leaders serving on the advisory panel.

The revelation about Bondi’s health battle appears to explain why her transition out of government remained relatively quiet in recent weeks.

Thyroid cancer is generally considered highly treatable when caught early, though treatment and recovery can vary significantly depending on the specific type and stage.

No additional public details have been released about Bondi’s diagnosis, treatment timeline, or long-term prognosis.

Bondi has long been one of Trump’s most visible political allies, serving as Florida attorney general before joining his orbit during his first presidential term.

She became a prominent public defender of Trump during impeachment battles, legal fights and campaign appearances, eventually taking over as attorney general in the administration.

Her return in a new advisory capacity suggests her relationship with the White House remains strong despite leaving the Justice Department.

For supporters, the news prompted an outpouring of prayers and well wishes as word of her diagnosis spread, Fox News reported.

Now, with treatment reportedly behind her and recovery underway, Bondi appears to be preparing for her next chapter.

And if Katie Miller’s update is any indication, Bondi is approaching this fight the same way she approached politics — head-on.
