Since 2001, approximately 7,060 U.S. service members have been killed in action in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Pakistan, and Africa.
In that same period, an estimated 141,000 to 147,000 veterans have taken their own lives at home.
The domestic battlefield is claiming twenty times more lives than the foreign one. According to the latest VA report, 6,398 former service members died by suicide in the most recent tracked year alone — an average of 17.5 per day. Independent organizations estimate the dark figure, including unclear drug overdoses, to be as high as 44 deaths daily.
The suicide rate among veterans currently stands at 35.2 per 100,000 — more than double the rate of the U.S. civilian population. Among female veterans, the risk is nearly twice that of civilian women. The most vulnerable group: young veterans aged 18 to 34, with a rate of 47.9 per 100,000.
