The first round of peace talks between the United States and Iran was postponed Friday after Vice President JD Vance canceled a planned trip to Switzerland, while renewed Israeli strikes in Lebanon raised fresh doubts about efforts to secure a broader agreement to end the conflict.
The delay added another layer of uncertainty to ongoing diplomatic efforts as tensions across the region continued to escalate, reports said late Thursday.

The escalation in Lebanon came just days after the United States and Iran signed an interim agreement and as both sides were preparing for their first direct negotiations aimed at reaching a long-term settlement to the conflict that began in late February.
The talks, which were scheduled to take place in Switzerland, were temporarily postponed following the latest Israeli strikes, according to a regional diplomat familiar with the discussions in an interview with NBC News.
The diplomat said Iran requested assurances that fighting in Lebanon would cease in accordance with the terms of the agreement reached with Washington.
Mediators are reportedly working to address the dispute and revive the negotiations.
Israeli officials said the strikes were carried out in response to an attack by the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah that killed four Israeli soldiers, including a senior commander.

The talks were intended to begin a 60-day negotiating period focused on resolving key long-term disputes and securing a permanent end to the conflict.
Early Friday, Switzerland’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the planned meeting between U.S. and Iranian officials would not take place at the Alpine resort of Bürgenstock as scheduled.

Representatives from Qatar and Pakistan were also expected to participate in the discussions, NBC News noted.
The postponement leaves uncertainty over when the parties will reconvene to continue negotiations.
“Switzerland remains ready to facilitate these talks,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement, adding that “relevant preparatory work” in Bürgenstock is continuing.
“As the Vice President said at his press conference, the plans for the upcoming technical talks have not been finalized, and the U.S. delegation has been prepared to depart at the first available opportunity,” a White House spokesperson told NBC News.
“But the logistics of these negotiations have never been simple or predictable. As of now the Vice President is not departing tonight,” the spokesperson added.
“We look forward to beginning technical talks as soon as possible,” they said.
Speaking at the White House earlier Thursday, Vance backed the deal with Iran and emphasized that Israel had to “respect this peace process that is fundamentally good for them and good for the entire region.”
He also laid waste to Israel government officials who were complaining about the deal.
“Donald J. Trump is the only head of state in the entire world who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel at this moment in time,” Vance said.
“If I was in the Cabinet of the Israeli government, I might not be attacking the only powerful ally that I have anywhere left in the entire world,” he said.
In Lebanon, the Israeli military said it carried out strikes against Hezbollah targets across southern parts of the country overnight and into Friday morning.
Lebanese health officials reported that at least 18 people were killed in the attacks.
Israeli officials said the strikes followed a Hezbollah attack that killed four Israeli soldiers and wounded five others.
Hezbollah also reported clashes with Israeli forces in the area.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he instructed the military to strike Hezbollah “with force” following the deaths of the four soldiers, including a battalion commander.
He called the attack “a blatant violation of the ceasefire.”
The military attacked “more than 80 terror targets and eliminated dozens of terrorists,” Netanyahu said, and hit the group’s headquarters in the Bekaa Valley on Friday morning.
