Up until very recently, the US mainstream media had Republicans trained and dancing around like nervous little show dogs.
All a reporter had to do was accuse them of being racist, sexist, extreme, dangerous, hateful, or whatever buzzword Dems were tossing around that week, and the average Republican would fold like a cheap suit and immediately start begging for forgiveness.
It was the same routine over and over… the shaky GOP fuddy-duddy would clarify, apologize, explain what they “really meant,” and surrender the entire argument before the battle had even started.
The media had complete and total control. Reporters were never just asking Republicans political questions. They were setting boundaries of what was deemed “acceptable thought” and daring weak R’s to step outside the lines.
Most Republicans were terrified of them and happily colored within the lines set by the media.
But Donald Trump wasn’t afraid.
And truthfully, that may be one of the most important and under appreciated reasons he was able to take over the Republican Party, win the presidency, survive nearly a decade of nonstop media warfare, and return to the White House after the entire political establishment tried to bury him.
Trump refused to accept the media’s authority over him.
He didn’t treat reporters like sacred guardians of truth. He treated them like political opponents with press passes, which is exactly how they’ve been behaving for years.
But Trump’s real gift goes beyond simply attacking the press and yelling at them. It’s far more “psychological” than that.
What Trump does is actually genius… he changes the balance of power.
A reporter approaches Trump expecting to place him on defense. She or he has the question, the microphone, the prepared framing, and an entire network waiting to clip his answer in just a way to suit their agenda.
It’s a setup.
Then Trump flips the table. He says five or six words, the room erupts in laughter, and suddenly the reporter is the story.
That’s his trick.
Trump rarely answers the question inside the carefully constructed little box the reporter brought with him. He blows up the box, turns the confrontation around, and makes the media defend itself.
Nobody had ever handled them quite like that before, and it’s why they hate him and feel so powerless.
Who can forget back in January 2017 at a press conference, when CNN’s Jim Acosta tried so many times to force his way into the exchange? Trump pointed at him and delivered three words that would define their relationship for years:
“You are fake news.”
A month later, when another CNN reporter challenged Trump for using the phrase, Trump casually announced that he was upgrading the network from “fake news” to “very fake news.”
The room laughed, and Jim’s little lecture quickly lost its punch.
That’s what Trump does better than anyone.
He doesn’t stand there obediently absorbing these hostile questions like a weak-kneed GOP politician, secretly hoping the reporter will reward him for behaving like a good little boy. He spots the attack, exposes the person delivering it, and changes the mood of the room before the media even knows what hits him.
The press came into the Trump era accustomed to controlling Republicans through fear and shame.
But then Trump changed the entire game and made them afraid of becoming his punchline.
And nearly a decade later, he can still pull it off in about six seconds.
The latest example came during a very quick exchange aboard Air Force One.
Trump asked a reporter which outlet she represented and thought she said BBC.
When she corrected him and said “ABC,” Trump didn’t launch into some long, goofy, drawn-out speech about media bias. He didn’t recite a list of unfair stories or argue with her about the network’s coverage.
He simply informed her that ABC was worse.
Then he added that he liked the BBC better.
The entire room cracked up.
That was it.
Six seconds, one wounded network, and another reporter who had no idea where the conversation was headed.
It’s an art form, and he just keeps getting better at it.

Trump immediately takes emotional control of the room, and that changes the entire dynamic. He does it with that lightning-fast Gemini wit of his, using humor to cut through all the noise and make his bigger message land.
It’s funny when you look back at how the old GOP walked into media interviews terrified that reporters might call them names.
Now, Trump walks in knowing he could give the reporters names of their own.
That’s how he flipped the entire script.
The media still attacks him, but they don’t own the room.
Trump does.
