WATCH: Trump Declines to Back Thune for Another Term as Leader But Throws Total Support Behind Speaker Mike Johnson – Thune Responds!

adrianoreid@hotmail.com - August 7, 2026

President Trump on Thursday declined to say whether he would support RINO Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s reelection as GOP Leader next year, citing his frustration with Thune’s failures on the SAVE America Act and terminating the filibuster.
Trump spoke to Punchbowl News’s Jake Sherman on Thursday for an interview that aired on Friday.
While discussing the confirmation of Todd Blanche to serve as Attorney General, Trump took aim at RINOs John Cornyn and Lisa Murkowski for opposing Blanche. Trump was then asked if he would support John Thune for another term as Leader, and he declined to say.
On the other hand, Mike Johnson, Trump said, is “great” and a “fantastic person.” He added, “I don’t think there’s even a thought of anybody challenging him.”

“I don’t want to get into that this early,” Trump said. “I get along with him. It’s unfortunate that he doesn’t have the votes.”
Trump doubled down, saying that he gets along with Thune, but noted, “I do have disagreements. I believe strongly in terminating the filibuster and, by the way, getting Save America Act approved immediately and about 400 other things in every hour of every day. Boom, boom, boom.” Trump said that he would want the filibuster terminated no matter what, whether the Democrats were planning to or not.
“We would get things that nobody ever dreamt of. We would be in office for the next 100 years, and I’ll tell you what: if they get in, I may be the last Republican president,” he said, calling on the Senate to “get smart.”

According to Punchbowl’s Andrew Desiderio, Thune responded, saying the President’s refusal to back him was “probably expected,” but that he feels Republicans have done a lot for Trump.
“That’s a reality I have to deal with. And he’s entitled to his views,” Thune added.

Previously, Thune has responded to Trump’s criticisms, lashing out at him and the White House and refusing to whip up the votes for the SAVE America Act.
Thune has also refused growing calls from Republican Senators to delay the August recess until the SAVE Act is passed.
Last month, Thune suggested there’s no path forward to passing the legislation, claiming that postponing recess would not be “in anybody’s best interest.”
