Trump Predicts AOC 2028 Run as Dem Scramble To Ditch Radical Past

Tevin McLeod - August 17, 2026

President Donald Trump predicted that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will seek the White House in 2028.

The president cast the New York socialist as the latest progressive scrambling to distance herself from the extreme positions that have alienated mainstream voters.

Speaking exclusively with Fox News during a trip to Long Island, Trump was asked about the 36-year-old lawmaker’s recent comments and her decision to freeze her eggs, which fueled fresh speculation about her long-term ambitions.

“I think so,” he told Fox News when asked whether AOC would run for president.

The congresswoman, a self-described democratic socialist and original member of “the Squad,” recently tried to walk back the excesses of the left’s peak-woke era.

On Sunday she declared that “woke 1.0 was crazy,” an apparent attempt to separate herself from the defund-the-police rhetoric, open-borders activism, and soft-on-crime policies that defined progressive politics around 2020.

Trump was unimpressed by the sudden pivot.

“But if you really look at it, they’re all saying the same thing. They’re all trying to disavow themselves from saying about crime and all, we love sanctuary cities. All of the things that they said they’re now trying to disavow,” Trump told Fox correspondent Alexis McAdams.

The president zeroed in on AOC’s longstanding support for sanctuary cities, policies that shield illegal immigrants from federal enforcement and have been linked to preventable crimes against American citizens.

“I think you’re going to see sanctuary cities start to end, because sanctuary cities are a disaster. And somebody like her, she was big for sanctuary cities,” Trump said.

Trump’s warning carries extra weight given his administration’s aggressive focus on ending the border crisis that exploded under the previous Democratic leadership.

Record deportations, restored interior enforcement, and pressure on local jurisdictions have already begun shifting the landscape.

Sanctuary policies that once drew applause at progressive rallies now poll as political poison outside deep-blue strongholds.

AOC’s attempt to rebrand comes as other left-wing candidates face similar scrutiny.

Trump specifically called out Michigan Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed for past writings that compared football to “toxic masculinity,” colonialism, and slavery.

“Well, it’s a great place when you have Michigan – it’s a great bad place to be saying it,” Trump said sarcastically.

“They have a great football team, and the number of great football teams up there that the people love. I would say that that’s a big mistake,” Trump added.

El-Sayed’s comments landed particularly poorly in a state that treats college and professional football as cultural bedrock.

The broader pattern is unmistakable.

After years of pushing radical ideas—defunding police, treating borders as optional, prioritizing identity politics over public safety—many on the Democratic left are now discovering those positions are electoral liabilities.

Voters watched crime spike in major cities, schools close for extended periods, and cities struggle under the weight of unmanaged illegal immigration.

AOC rose to prominence by embracing the most extreme elements of the progressive movement.

She called for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, supported the Green New Deal’s sweeping economic transformation, and cheered on the social unrest of 2020.

Her sudden claim that the earlier version of “woke” was “crazy” rings hollow to those who watched her amplify those very ideas when they were fashionable.

Conservatives argue that authenticity matters. Politicians who spent years advocating open borders and reduced police funding cannot simply declare a software update and expect voters to forget.

Trump’s prediction that AOC will run for higher office underscores his belief that the Democratic Party remains captive to its radical wing, even as individual candidates try to moderate their language for broader appeal.

The egg-freezing revelation added another layer of speculation about AOC’s timeline.

At 36, the decision was widely interpreted as a signal she is planning a longer political career that could include a presidential bid once Trump’s second term ends.

Yet any national campaign would force her to defend a record filled with statements and votes that sit far outside the American mainstream.

Trump’s comments also highlighted the contrast between his administration’s results-oriented approach and the left’s ideological experiments.

While progressives once celebrated sanctuary cities as moral imperatives, the president is actively working to end them.

While some Democrats once treated football and traditional masculinity as problems to be solved, Trump recognizes them as sources of community pride and national strength.
