Left-wing federal judges continue to defy belief with their insanely lenient rulings, even when federal prosecutors are practically begging them to get tough with accused criminals.
A federal magistrate judge has ordered the release of a woman accused of spray-painting the World War II Memorial and pouring detergent into its fountain, rejecting prosecutors’ request to keep her in custody while the case moves forward.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew J. Sharbaugh ordered 41-year-old Melissa Farris released on personal recognizance Monday following a hearing in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
Federal prosecutors opposed her release, arguing that Farris presented an “exceptionally high risk of flight.”
They subsequently asked Sharbaugh to reconsider his decision, but the request was unsuccessful.

Farris remains charged with two federal felonies stemming from the alleged vandalism at the World War II Memorial.
The ruling quickly attracted criticism on social media, where opponents highlighted Sharbaugh’s connection to anti-Trump Chief Judge James Boasberg, who administered his oath of office in October 2024.

Boasberg has drawn significant attention during the Trump administration after issuing several rulings challenging or restricting parts of the administration’s immigration enforcement agenda.
Sharbaugh did not require Farris to post bond but imposed several conditions on her release.
Farris must surrender her passport and remain within the continental United States unless she receives court approval to travel elsewhere.
She was also ordered to report to federal pretrial services officials in Ohio by Aug. 20.
In addition, Farris must stay outside Washington, D.C., except when required to appear for court proceedings, avoid the World War II Memorial and undergo a mental health evaluation while her federal case remains pending.
The Justice Department said U.S. Park Police responded to the World War II Memorial at approximately 2 p.m. on Aug. 13 after receiving reports of a disorderly person at the site.
According to prosecutors, a witness reported seeing a woman spray-painting the Atlantic Theater Pavilion, while a responding ranger discovered foam filling the memorial’s fountain.
Authorities said the words “Clean Hands Dirty $” had been spray-painted on a wall. Investigators also found green paint on the structure and pink paint splattered across the surrounding ground.
Officials initially estimated that cleaning and repairing the damage would cost more than $1,000.

Investigators identified Farris through photographs taken by witnesses and publicly available videos posted under the name “Melissa Lovewell,” according to the criminal complaint.
Prosecutors allege that before the incident, Farris discussed her intentions during a livestream, saying she was attempting to bring attention to an alleged whistleblower case and declaring, “I am accountable for my actions.”
Another video reportedly captured her acknowledging responsibility, saying, “It was me, I’m doing it, it’s on camera.”
Her online posts portrayed the alleged vandalism as an act of political protest focused on government spending and accusations of corporate misconduct.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro charged Farris with depredation against property of the United States and destruction of a veterans’ memorial.

“Defacing the World War II Memorial is a disgusting act and an insult to the Americans who fought and died for our country,” Pirro said at the time.

The memorial honors 16 million Americans who served during World War II, including more than 400,000 who never returned home.
Federal prosecutors argued that the conditions imposed by the court were insufficient to ensure Farris would appear for future proceedings, pointing to what they described as her unstable housing situation and limited ties to Washington, D.C.

According to the Washington Examiner, investigators also found evidence that Farris searched for bus and airline tickets on the night of the alleged vandalism, which prosecutors cited in arguing that she presented a significant flight risk.
The government additionally pointed to what it described as Farris’ history of failing to comply with court orders and an Aug. 10 arrest for allegedly camping illegally on federal property.
Prosecutors argued that the earlier encounter with law enforcement failed to deter her and alleged that her subsequent conduct on federal property escalated from the previous incident.
