Leftists Erupt Over ‘Secret Meeting’ Between Jeffries, Trump World

Tevin McLeod - August 24, 2026

Leftists are once again revealing their true nature after learning of a “secret” meeting involving House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and a member of President Trump’s family.

Jeffries is facing backlash from prominent progressives following revelations that he recently held a private meeting with Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and influential outside adviser.

The meeting took place at a private location in New York City provided by a mutual friend, according to reporting first published Sunday by The New York Times.

Jeffries and Kushner, who is married to Ivanka Trump, reportedly discussed several potential areas of cooperation, including housing, immigration, and the high cost of living.

The timing is particularly significant, with the November midterm elections approaching and Democrats potentially poised to capture control of the House.

If Democrats win the majority, Jeffries would be the leading candidate to become the next House speaker.

The meeting suggests that figures close to Trump are already considering how the administration might work with a Democratic-controlled House should Republicans lose their narrow majority.

Kushner and Jeffries are not strangers.

The two formerly worked together on criminal justice legislation during Trump’s first administration and have remained in contact. They also reportedly met last year.

But news of their latest private discussion has angered some progressives who believe Democratic leaders should be preparing for an aggressive confrontation with the Trump administration rather than quietly searching for potential areas of compromise.

“The private get-together was described by one of the people as a catch-up for Mr. Kushner and Mr. Jeffries,” Haberman and Karni wrote.

“The two men have stayed in touch since they worked together on a criminal justice bill midway through Mr. Trump’s first term. During the recent meeting, the pair discussed housing, immigration and the high cost of living as potential areas of common ground,” the report continued.

“Mr. Kushner suggested that Mr. Jeffries should meet with the White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, two people with knowledge of the meeting said,” the report added.

Whatever the reasoning behind the private discussion, news of the meeting quickly triggered anger among progressive activists and prominent Trump critics.

Several questioned why Jeffries, who could become House speaker if Democrats capture the chamber in November, would privately seek common ground with Jared Kushner as Democrats simultaneously campaign against the Trump administration.

The backlash also revived longstanding tensions between Jeffries and the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, with some critics openly questioning his leadership and arguing that Democrats should be preparing for aggressive oversight of Trump rather than cultivating relationships with members of his inner circle.

Others objected specifically to Kushner’s involvement because he holds no formal position in the administration, despite continuing to serve as an outside adviser to Trump.

Jared Kushner has no actual government job he just uses his family connections to get money from gulf autocrats and fund corrupt deals. The only way @RepJeffries should work with him is with demands for documents and subpoenas. https://t.co/5dBHVHW0CT

WTF. Did you not get the memo, Jeffries? We want fighters, not conciliators. There is no working with fascists. Fascists are to be fought.

A secret meeting was just held between Jeffries and Kushner.

Jeffries and Schumer have to go if Democrats are even going to gain any ground. They need fighters not secret meetings..

Meanwhile, President Trump is scheduled to travel to Houston, Texas, on Thursday and Friday, August 27–28, combining political fundraising with an official ceremony honoring NASA astronauts.

On Thursday, Trump is expected to headline a Republican National Committee fundraiser in Houston.

Reporting indicates the private event aims to raise money for the RNC’s midterm election efforts and specifically supports Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican Senate nominee in a closely watched race.

Sources familiar with the plans confirmed the visit focuses on building the party’s financial resources ahead of the November elections, with Trump drawing on Texas’s network of conservative donors.

RNC officials have previously noted the state’s importance as a fundraising hub.

The following day, Friday, centers on a public-facing event at NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.

Trump will award the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to the three American members of the Artemis II crew—Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialist Christina Koch—who completed a historic lunar fly-by mission earlier in 2026.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman is expected to join the president.
