Hegseth Pushes Back On Report He’s Considering 2028 Presidential Run

Tevin McLeod - August 30, 2026

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is reportedly considering a move that could dramatically reshape the emerging battle over who eventually inherits President Donald Trump’s MAGA coalition.

The report immediately generated speculation about another heavyweight potentially joining what could become a crowded Republican presidential field.

The Pentagon is strongly disputing the story, and Hegseth himself responded with an emphatic denial after it was published.

But NBC News reports that conversations about his political future have already occurred privately with people close to the defense secretary and his family.

Hegseth and his wife, Jennifer, have privately discussed the possibility of him running for president in 2028 with friends and associates over the past several months, two people familiar with the conversations told NBC News.

The report potentially places Hegseth alongside Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as prominent Trump administration figures whose names are already being discussed in connection with the next Republican presidential nomination.

The Pentagon, however, flatly rejected NBC’s reporting.

“Secretary Hegseth is not running for president, and his main priority is leading the War Department,” a Pentagon spokesperson told the network.

“All other speculation is foolish,” the statement added.

Hegseth personally responded after the report was published and was even more forceful in his denial.

“100% false,” Hegseth wrote on X.

“We told NBC that, but they just lie w/ anonymous ‘sources,’” he added.

Speculation surrounding Hegseth’s political ambitions intensified earlier this month after he traveled to the Iowa State Fair to campaign alongside Republican Rep. Zach Nunn.

Iowa’s traditional position near the beginning of the Republican presidential nominating process naturally drew attention to the defense secretary’s appearance.

Hegseth has also maintained a political profile that extends beyond the traditional responsibilities associated with running the Pentagon.

The former Fox News host has repeatedly highlighted his efforts to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and other military policies he has characterized as “woke garbage.”

Those fights have helped Hegseth build significant popularity with Trump’s political base, according to Republican operatives interviewed by NBC News.

“Hegseth is good for men, for base voters,” one Republican operative involved in the midterms told the network.

“He encapsulates that masculinity that Trump captured in 2024,” the operative added.

A potential Hegseth campaign would nevertheless face substantial challenges if he ultimately decided to enter the race.

His tenure overseeing the Pentagon has included scrutiny surrounding the ongoing conflict with Iran as well as the controversy commonly known as “Signalgate.”

One pro-Trump operative close to the White House told NBC that although “MAGA really loves Hegseth,” the defense secretary would ultimately need to demonstrate success in his current position.

“If you want to be secretary of war, you’ve got to win wars,” the operative said.

Others in conservative politics are already publicly encouraging Hegseth to at least consider the possibility.

American Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp told NBC News that he believes Hegseth should consider seeking the presidency.

“Pete Hegseth should consider running for president,” Schlapp said, describing him as “an impressive guy” with “a tremendous amount of energy.”

The speculation arrives as Republicans increasingly begin looking beyond Trump’s presidency and considering who could inherit his political movement in 2028.

Vance is widely regarded as a natural potential successor, while Rubio’s national profile and lengthy political résumé have also generated speculation about another presidential campaign.

Adding Hegseth to that potential field would introduce another Trump administration figure with substantial recognition among conservative voters.

For now, however, there is a significant divide between what NBC News says its sources are describing privately and what Hegseth is saying publicly.

NBC reports presidential conversations have occurred behind the scenes, Mediaite reported.

Hegseth’s answer could not be clearer: “100% false.”
