We’ve officially reached the point where real life has become so absurd that you have to check whether a video is AI before you can believe your own eyes.

And this one definitely needed checking… how can it be real? Well, sadly, it is.

On Wednesday afternoon, a gunman opened fire inside a high-rise apartment building in downtown Minneapolis. People were dying, officers were being shot, and police from across the area poured onto the scene while wounded victims were being pulled from the building.

This was the real deal… no time for gimmicks and nonsense.

Then a video from outside the crime scene started making the rounds, and one lady cop, clutching a gun, was caught walking through all those squad cars, looking like she’d taken a wrong turn on the way to Happy Hour.

What was the video showing?

A female police officer…

In strappy heels.

Yes, really.

And before anybody dismisses this as some silly fashion faux pas, take another look at what was happening around her.

This was an active mass-shooting scene where officers had already been injured. Police had no idea what they might face down next, and the people responding were walking into the kind of situation where being able to move quickly could literally mean the difference between life and death for themselves and the people around them.

There’s a reason cops wear boots.

You can’t sprint properly in strappy heels, and you can’t count on your footing. One bad step, a curb, one slick patch of pavement, and suddenly the person who’s supposed to be helping during an emergency has become another emergency.

And if your job can require you to run toward gunfire with absolutely no warning, maybe the footwear shouldn’t look like you’re heading to a jazz club.

Before we get to the video, here’s how serious the scene actually was.

The shooting happened at an apartment building near 15 East Grant Street in downtown Minneapolis.

CNN:

The man who carried out a deadly shooting in a Minneapolis apartment building had been investigated in June after displaying a handgun, but wasn’t charged, the county prosecutor said Thursday.

Carlton Johnson was killed by police who raced to the building after the first reports of gunfire, said Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the state investigate agency.

Court documents say Johnson was facing eviction and had threatened a fellow resident with a gun in the months leading up to the shooting, which left two people dead, along with Johnson, and five others injured.

Keep that scene in mind when you watch what comes next…

This wasn’t some lady cop directing traffic after a parade or standing behind a desk at headquarters. People had just been shot, officers were injured, and the scene was exploding with chaos.

And right in the middle of all that comes some lady officer whose shoes don’t “match” a mass casualty scene.

Watch:

Visually speaking, this is absolutely ridiculous.

But underneath the joke is yet another legitimate safety issue brought to us by lady cops.

We’ve discussed this topic from every angle imaginable.

Revolver:

Is it finally time to end the failed “female cop” experiment?

In the images making the rounds, female police officers appear to freeze or take cover and hide in fear during the terror attack. Meanwhile, an unarmed male civilian risked his life and charged one of the attackers and wrestled away his gun. Yes, the scene was terrifying and chaotic. But these are the moments when we need heroes in charge, not frightened women.

It’s totally understandable that women, and plenty of men too, would be scared stiff in that situation. But men are made differently. When chaos hits, they’re far more likely to move toward danger, not away from it.

The problem is, we’ve spent years pretending men and women are interchangeable in every role, under every condition, no matter how dangerous or fast-thinking the situation is. And that’s just not true.

Women and men are wired differently. Period. Women are better at a ton of things. But violent, split-second, life-or-death confrontations aren’t where most women thrive. Pretending otherwise doesn’t empower women. It puts them and everyone else in danger.

The key here is that many lady cops are putting everyone in danger, and what happened in Minneapolis is just another disturbing example of that.

Police officers don’t get to schedule emergencies around what they happen to be wearing that day. A situation can go sideways in seconds. An officer standing outside the perimeter one minute could suddenly need to move or help somebody, and that’s why uniforms and equipment are built around the job.

If you’re carrying a badge and a gun at the scene of a mass shooting, the public should feel confident that you’ll show up prepared to do actual police work, not a dance recital.

And watching this clip reminded us of one of the funniest “Portlandia” sketches ever made.

Except Portlandia was joking.

Back in 2012, Portlandia did an episode called “Cops Redesign.”

For anybody who never watched the show, Portlandia made an art form out of mocking the ridiculous progressive culture of Portland, Oregon.

In this sketch, the job is to give the Portland Police Department a fashion makeover.

The whole joke is that they start treating cop uniforms like Project Runway, instead of equipment they wear while doing an extremely dangerous job.

Sound familiar?

That sketch aired fourteen years ago, and who knew it was a prophecy?

The reason the joke worked was because everyone understood how stupid it would be to design police clothing around looking fashionable instead of being able to do the job.

Now we’ve got an actual officer prancing around a mass shooting in strappy heels, and now Portlandia looks like a documentary.

This latest clip is going to dump another gallon of gas on the already fiery debate over women doing frontline police work.

That debate has been around for a long time, especially when it comes to the physical part of the job, tactical readiness. Do we actually believe police departments are holding every officer doing the same dangerous job to the same standard? Clearly not, thanks to this “strappy heel” clip.

The public shouldn’t have to lower expectations because the officer is a woman.

There were actual heroes at that Minneapolis apartment building, and they weren’t wearing heels.

Many officers rushed into a building where shots were still being fired. That’s serious work, and everybody should show up prepared.
