Sen. John Fetterman has once again angered the Democratic Party base with a stunt he pulled Wednesday evening.
Fetterman, D-Pa., made an unexpected appearance at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday, delivering a prerecorded message praising President Donald Trump and his Pennsylvania counterpart, Republican Sen. Dave McCormick, while distancing himself from what he described as political “extremes and socialism” of his party.

Fetterman appeared in a roughly one-minute video that was played before McCormick took the stage at the Republican National Committee’s midterm gathering.
“Why am I here talking to you today? Because, well, I’m a common-sense Democrat,” Fetterman said.
“I’m always going to stand with America,” he continued. “I’m always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti-American way of life.”

Standing in front of a Pennsylvania steel mill, Fetterman used much of the message to highlight his relationship with McCormick and their shared interest in the state’s steel industry.
He described McCormick as a “great American” and praised him as “the kind of senator that gets the job done.”
Fetterman also said he intended to continue working with both McCormick and Trump on policies aimed at protecting steel production in Pennsylvania.
“I will work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life,” Fetterman said.
The appearance was striking because Fetterman remains a Democratic senator and was speaking to an audience gathered specifically to help Republicans retain control of Congress in the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
The Dallas convention is an unusual off-year national gathering organized around Trump and Republican congressional candidates. Trump delivered the keynote address Wednesday night, while Vice President JD Vance and other Republican officials were also scheduled to appear during the two-day event.
Fetterman did not announce a party switch or formally endorse the Republican Party.

Instead, his remarks were framed around his relationship with McCormick and his continuing criticism of the Democratic Party’s left-wing socialism.

That distinction is consistent with Fetterman’s position over the past several years.
Since entering the Senate in 2023, he has repeatedly broken with fellow Democrats on several high-profile issues, particularly Israel, immigration and national security. He has been one of the Democratic Party’s strongest supporters of Israel and has sharply criticized some progressive activists and politicians associated with the Democratic Socialists of America.

Fetterman has also crossed party lines on a number of Senate votes.
Reuters noted that he supported multiple Trump administration nominees, opposed efforts to curtail U.S. military involvement in the conflict with Iran and repeatedly voted with Republicans during last year’s government shutdown.
Those positions have increasingly strained his relationship with parts of the Democratic Party.
The divide widened further in recent days after The Wall Street Journal reported complaints from former aides about Fetterman’s attendance at constituent meetings, Senate hearings and Pennsylvania events.
Several Pennsylvania Democrats responded publicly to that reporting, with some questioning Fetterman’s performance in office and his future within the party.
Fetterman has disputed that broader characterization of his work and has said he remains committed to representing Pennsylvania.

He has also repeatedly denied suggestions that he plans to become a Republican.
The relationship between Fetterman and McCormick has attracted attention since McCormick entered the Senate in 2025.
Although the two represent opposing parties, they have frequently emphasized areas of cooperation and have appeared together at events in Pennsylvania.
Fetterman has described McCormick as a friend, while McCormick has similarly spoken positively about their working relationship.
Their cooperation has been particularly visible on issues involving Pennsylvania’s industrial economy and U.S. Steel.
Fetterman has long argued that domestic steel production is important to western Pennsylvania communities, and his convention video used the mill setting to reinforce that message.
