South African police announced Friday that six Nigerians linked to an organized criminal network will be extradited to the United States after allegedly helping swindle American women out of more than $6 million through online romance scams.
The six men were arrested in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2021 and will be handed over to the FBI on Friday to be taken to the U.S. to face wire fraud and money laundering charges, according to the Associated Press.
“Through the coordination of Interpol South Africa, the six will today be transported from a correctional facility in Cape Town to Cape Town International Airport, where they will be handed over to officials from the FBI and the United States Secret Service, who arrived in South Africa this morning,” police spokesperson Katlego Mogale said.
The six men have been accused of defrauding more than 100 American women through online romance and love scams. The alleged victims include businesspeople who were reportedly targeted through complex online relationships.
Interpol said it has conducted multiple operations in recent months, including one last month that targeted West African organized crime groups and led to the arrest of 58 people and the identification of 263 suspects linked to various criminal networks involved in similar crimes.
