For nearly 20 years now, one version of Governor Rod Blagojevich’s story has dominated everything… the story the media ran with claimed that the former Illinois governor tried to sell Barack Obama’s vacant United States Senate seat.And sadly, that accusation came to define him. He was removed from office, and years later his wife and young daughters watched him leave for federal prison, where he remained for almost eight years.Through all of it, Governor Blagojevich kept insisting that Americans never got the full story of what was happening behind those infamous wiretaps.One part of his defense centered on what became known as the “Madigan deal.” Blagojevich maintained that he was considering appointing then-Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan to Obama’s Senate seat as part of a political agreement with her father, powerful Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, that could help move Blagojevich’s legislative agenda.But all the public heard about was Blagojevich supposedly trying to “sell” the Senate seat.And what his jury didn’t hear were newly released FBI interview records showing that Barack Obama’s own inner circle was discussing Lisa Madigan too, and that Obama loyalist Rahm Emanuel was actually communicating with the Blagojevich administration about her.Weaponization Watch believes those records raise serious questions about what the government knew, what the jury was allowed to hear, and whether prosecutors presented the Madigan proposal fairly.Nine days after Blagojevich’s December 9, 2008 arrest, the FBI interviewed President-elect Barack Obama. Two days later, agents interviewed Rahm Emanuel, who was preparing to become Obama’s White House chief of staff.The records of those interviews are known as FD-302s.Fox News obtained the partially redacted reports and published their contents on September 18, 2026. The Obama interview addressed whether Emanuel had communicated with the Blagojevich administration about Lisa Madigan and legislation.Fox News:Obama was asked whether he was aware of Emanuel having a conversation with the Blagojevich administration regarding Lisa Madigan being considered for the Senate seat in exchange for legislation being passed.Emanuel would have been aware that Lisa Madigan was an acceptable candidate to Obama. Emanuel had an open line of conversation with the Blagojevich administration.The Emanuel interview gets even more specific. According to the report, Emanuel and David Axelrod met with U.S. Senator Dick Durbin on December 8, 2008, the day before Blagojevich was arrested.Fox News:In this meeting, they all agreed that Lisa Madigan would be a good candidate.As a result of this conversation, Emanuel contacted Harris and told him the merits of appointing Lisa Madigan as Senator.By the way, “Harris” was John Harris, Blagojevich’s chief of staff.These newly released interviews back up exactly what Governor Blagojevich has said for years: the Madigan deal was real and was being discussed before his arrest.Even so, on the morning of December 9, federal agents arrived at Blagojevich’s home.Illinois politics at the time had become deeply dysfunctional, with Governor Blagojevich and Speaker Michael Madigan locked in a bitter fight over the governor’s legislative agenda.Blagojevich has always said he considered appointing Lisa Madigan to Obama’s Senate seat in exchange for Speaker Madigan’s support on infrastructure and healthcare legislation, a political agreement meant to benefit Illinois, not put money in his own pocket.Blagojevich’s position was that this was standard political horse-trading, the kind of compromise elected officials make every single day in order to get legislation passed. The federal appellate court later described this type of political exchange as “everyday politics,” and the charges connected to the Senate-seat negotiations were ultimately overturned and dismissed.But Blagojevich’s jury never heard the full story.The federal government recorded hundreds of hours of Blagojevich’s private conversations, but according to Blagojevich and his legal team, the jury heard only about two percent of those chats.What the public did hear was one line that would follow him for years:The State Journal Register: “I’ve got this thing, and it’s [expletive] golden. I’m just not giving it up for [expletive] nothing.”That sentence was played over and over as so-called “proof” that Blagojevich intended to “sell” Obama’s Senate seat.His defense has always maintained that the recordings the jury didn’t hear provided the all-important missing context. According to Blagojevich, the “something” he wanted in return wasn’t a personal payoff. He was talking about political concessions that could help move healthcare, infrastructure, and other priorities for Illinois.And now we know something else, too. And this is where the interviews we showed you earlier become even more important. They confirm that Lisa Madigan was being discussed by Obama’s team, that Emanuel was communicating directly with Blagojevich’s chief of staff about her, and that Obama knew those discussions were taking place.So if the Madigan deal was some wild story Blagojevich invented after his arrest, how do we explain what Obama and Emanuel told the FBI within days of that arrest?That’s a question his jury never got the chance to consider, and we believe it would’ve been a game-changer.This part of the case is especially troubling to Weaponization Watch.Blagojevich’s defense says prosecutors successfully kept recordings involving the Madigan proposal away from the jury. Then, according to his defense, lead prosecutor Reid Schar used the lack of those recordings to argue that there wasn’t evidence supporting Blagojevich’s explanation.Now stop and think about what happened here. According to Blagojevich’s defense, prosecutors helped keep recordings supporting the Madigan deal away from the jury, then turned around and used the absence of that very evidence to attack his story.If you’re wondering how a defendant is supposed to overcome that, you’re asking the same question we are.The jury ultimately decided Blagojevich’s fate without ever the evidence that supported his account of the events. Trump commuted Blagojevich’s sentence in 2020 and granted him a full and unconditional pardon in 2025. Weaponization Watch believes the President deserves credit for looking beyond the headlines and reconsidering a case that raised serious questions about how federal power was used.Governor Blagojevich thanked the president when he was released.But Rod Blagojevich still lost almost eight years with his family.
