Key Republican Emerges As possible Pick For Minority Leader If House Flips

Tevin McLeod - October 8, 2026

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan is emerging as a potential Republican leader if Democrats capture the House in November.

The Ohio conservative could become President Donald Trump’s leading congressional defender against Democratic investigations and possible impeachment efforts.

One lawmaker privately told Fox News they predict a leadership shakeup, potentially replacing Speaker Mike Johnson and triggering a contest between Jordan and Steve Scalise.

“I don’t see a scenario where everyone gets to keep their job,” the anonymous Republican told Fox News.

Another Republican described Jordan as the “number one name” circulating in discussions about the minority leader position.

Jordan remains popular with grassroots conservatives and has spent recent months campaigning for vulnerable Republicans across the country.

His appeal reportedly extends beyond the House Freedom Caucus, whose members champion limited government and aggressive congressional oversight.

One colleague described the committee chairman’s expanded relationships as “Jim Jordan 2.0.”

That Republican said Jordan has broadened his support while avoiding public attacks against current GOP leadership.

Jordan himself has not announced any leadership campaign and recently said he was “focused on winning” the majority.

His reluctance matters because Republicans still hope to preserve their majority and keep Johnson as speaker.

Johnson insists Republicans can overcome the historical difficulties facing a president’s party during midterm elections.

“This is a midterm unlike any other,” Johnson said, predicting Republicans would retain and expand their majority.

Trump’s campaign has likewise endorsed Johnson’s leadership and urged Republicans to reelect him speaker if they prevail.

But anonymous lawmakers described growing anxiety over polling suggesting Democrats could gain enough seats to seize control.

Three Republicans interviewed by Fox predicted Democratic gains of approximately 20 to 25 House seats.

Those predictions are assessments, not election results, and the chamber’s eventual balance remains uncertain.

A recent Fox News projection showed Democrats favored in 215 districts and Republicans in 201, with 19 tossups.

Under that scenario, Democrats would need three tossup victories to reach the 218 seats required for control.

Republicans would need at least 17 of those contests, underscoring the difficult electoral landscape facing Johnson.

The party’s four-week campaign plan emphasizes border security, economic concerns, public safety and alleged misuse of taxpayer money.

Republicans argue those issues distinguish their agenda from Democratic proposals involving higher spending and broader government intervention.

Democrats counter that affordability concerns and dissatisfaction with Trump’s policies make Republican incumbents vulnerable.

A House takeover would place Democrat Hakeem Jeffries in position to become speaker and control committee agendas.

Republicans expect Democratic committee chairs could pursue investigations into Trump administration decisions and senior officials.

Jordan’s Judiciary Committee experience could make him a prominent counterweight to those investigations from the minority.

He led high-profile oversight battles and previously challenged federal law enforcement decisions during Democratic administrations.

Jordan also sought the speakership in October 2023 after Republicans removed Kevin McCarthy from the position.

That effort failed when several moderate Republicans refused to support him despite substantial conservative enthusiasm.

Scalise initially defeated Jordan in an internal Republican vote but withdrew after failing to secure sufficient floor support.

Johnson ultimately won the speakership following weeks of internal turmoil and repeated unsuccessful leadership ballots.

The minority leader contest would operate differently because Republicans would choose their leader within their own conference.

That means Jordan would not need the votes of Democrats or a majority of the entire House.

One Republican suggested Democratic gains could eliminate several moderates who opposed Jordan during his earlier speaker campaign.

That lawmaker said a more conservative remaining conference would substantially improve Jordan’s chances.

The same member pledged “1,000%” support for Jordan if he sought the leadership position.

Scalise nevertheless enters any hypothetical contest with years of leadership experience and extensive relationships throughout the conference.

A Republican source suggested Scalise currently leads the prospective race, with Jordan close behind.

Another defended Scalise as an experienced negotiator who understands the administration and essential congressional legislation.

Jordan’s supporters emphasize his combative oversight style, national recognition and ability to attract conservative audiences.

One colleague said Jordan’s appearances could draw hundreds of supporters to other Republicans’ campaign events.

But colleagues also recognize that leadership requires fundraising, coalition building and negotiating legislation across ideological divisions.

Johnson could seek minority leadership himself, despite speculation that he would prefer to step down after losing the speakership.

One Republican argued Johnson would retain support because he raised money and assembled difficult legislative majorities.
