Boxing Legend Mike Tyson Joins Trump On Campaign Trail

Tevin McLeod - October 11, 2026

President Donald Trump delivered an unexpected moment during a packed campaign rally in Syracuse, New York, on Friday night when he invited legendary heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson onto the stage, drawing an enthusiastic response from supporters.

The president, who has maintained a friendship with Tyson for nearly four decades, praised the former champion as one of the most intimidating fighters in boxing history.

Trump pumped his fist while celebrating Tyson’s career before inviting the 60-year-old boxing icon to address the audience.

The appearance came after Tyson spent part of Friday at the White House and accompanied Trump aboard Marine One and Air Force One for the trip to Syracuse.

The rally was organized to support Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman, who is challenging Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul in November’s election.

Trump interrupted his political remarks to acknowledge Tyson, who is from Brooklyn, N.Y., and who was standing near Blakeman.

“I see somebody in the audience that I will never fight, I promise,” Trump told the crowd.

The president then recalled watching Tyson during his championship years, when the boxer developed a reputation for overwhelming opponents with extraordinary punching power.

“But I remember when Mike was in his prime, when he was the heavyweight champion of the world. He’d stand in the corner, and all of his people would be holding him back,” Trump said.

“He was a very dangerous person actually, and he was one of the greatest fighters in history.”

Trump then joked that Blakeman had made a wise decision by standing close to the former champion.

“I see him standing right next to Bruce Blakeman. Bruce wants a little protection, he’s got the right guy,” Trump said. “Bruce knows who to stand near.”

The president subsequently invited Tyson onto the stage, where the two shook hands before the boxer addressed the audience.

Tyson kept his remarks brief but made his admiration for the president clear.

“Thank you very much. I’m just happy to be here with my president, President Trump,” Tyson told the crowd.

“And there’s no way in the world I would ever be here if it wasn’t for a president like Donald Trump.”

Trump smiled as Tyson finished speaking and again praised the former heavyweight champion.

“I watched him get in the ring many times. He was a scary guy,” the president said.

Trump also joked about Tyson’s appearance, telling the audience that the former boxer looked better than he had decades earlier.

“I think he looks better now than he did 30 years ago,” Trump said.

The exchange provided a lighter moment during a rally otherwise dominated by the upcoming elections, New York politics and the president’s economic agenda.

Tyson’s participation began hours before the Syracuse rally.

The former heavyweight champion made an unexpected appearance in the White House briefing room Friday afternoon, where reporters questioned him about his visit.

Asked whether Republicans would win the upcoming midterm elections, Tyson offered an unusual response.

“I think Donald Trump will win,” he said.

Trump himself is not on the ballot in November, although he has repeatedly urged supporters to treat the congressional elections as a referendum on his administration.

Later that afternoon, Tyson joined Trump outside the White House as the president prepared to depart.

Speaking with reporters, Trump joked that he had no intention of stepping into a boxing ring with his longtime friend.

“I won’t be fighting him today,” the president said.

The two boarded Marine One before traveling to Joint Base Andrews, where they transferred to Air Force One for the flight to New York.

New York Yankees President Randy Levine also accompanied the president, along with several administration officials and Republican lawmakers.

The presidential aircraft arrived in Syracuse shortly before 7 p.m.

Trump and Tyson have known each other since the late 1980s, when Trump was a prominent Atlantic City casino owner and Tyson was dominating professional boxing.

Their relationship developed during a period when several major heavyweight fights were staged at Trump-associated venues.

One of the most memorable took place in June 1988, when Tyson defeated previously unbeaten heavyweight champion Michael Spinks in just 91 seconds.

The fight was held at the Atlantic City Convention Hall and became one of the defining moments of Tyson’s career.

Trump helped promote the event, which attracted enormous publicity and generated significant revenue.

Tyson later became one of the most recognizable athletes in the world, compiling a professional record of 50 victories, including 44 knockouts, and seven losses.

He became the youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history when he defeated Trevor Berbick in November 1986 at age 20.
