Oregon Gov Race Tightens As Republican Moves Into Lead

Tevin McLeod - October 13, 2026

A race once treated as comfortable for the incumbent has become harder to dismiss.

Voters are weighing local frustrations against a national political climate that could pull the contest in another direction.

Fox News moved Oregon’s governor race from Likely Democrat to Lean Democrat as Christine Drazan challenges incumbent Tina Kotek.

The change in its Power Rankings signals a tighter contest, although Kotek remains the forecast favorite.

Recent public polling also places their rematch within the margin of error, according to Fox’s report.

For Republicans, the opening raises the possibility of ending more than four decades without winning Oregon’s governorship.

For Democrats, the state’s voting history offers a reminder that a close poll is not an election result.

Kamala Harris carried Oregon by 14 points in 2024, while Democratic Senator Ron Wyden won by 15 points in 2022.

Governor races, however, have been more competitive than those statewide federal contests.

Drazan lost to Kotek by fewer than four points in their 2022 race.

She subsequently won election to the Oregon House in 2024, returned to legislative leadership, and later joined the state Senate.

BLUE STATE SHAKEUP: Fox News Power Rankings shift Oregon’s governor race toward the GOP as Republican Christine Drazan mounts a competitive rematch against Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek.

Republicans haven’t won the Oregon governor’s mansion in more than four decades, but concerns over homelessness, failing schools, rising taxes and the cost of living have cracked open the door. The latest public polls show a margin-of-error race in a state Kamala Harris carried by 14 points just last year.

Drazan lost to Kotek by less than four points in 2022, returned to the legislature, and is now framing the contest as a local referendum on single-party control rather than a national proxy fight. Kotek’s team is working to tie Drazan to Trump, who remains deeply unpopular in Oregon. The question is whether local frustration outweighs national headwinds.

🚨 NEW: During Friday’s debate with the Oregonian, Republican candidate Christine Drazan COMPLETELY DISMANTLES Oregon Governor Tina Kotek over blaming education on the federal government!

Drazan: “You just can’t stop…I can’t believe you’re not taking more responsibility…!”

THIS is the Drazan Oregon NEEDS and WANTS TO SEE! Oregon is in shambles and the people want courage and boldness! Drazan showed it here! I’m PUMPED!

Drazan now argues that Oregonians know her better and see problems demanding a change in direction.

She has put homelessness, housing, education, taxes, addiction, and the cost of living near the center of her campaign.

Those issues reach directly into household budgets and the performance of services funded by taxpayers.

Drazan says prolonged Democratic control has left too many voices outside the decisions shaping Oregon’s future.

“Single-party control has not been good for us,” she told Fox News Digital.

That is the challenger’s argument, and voters will judge it against Kotek’s record and her plans for another term.

Kotek’s campaign is shifting its focus by linking Drazan to President Donald Trump.

Campaign communications director Federico Araujo said the governor is protecting Oregonians from federal overreach and harm.

He portrayed Drazan as a candidate who would advance Trump’s agenda.

That message seeks to turn a state-focused contest into a choice about national leadership as well as Oregon policy.

Trump remains unpopular in Oregon, according to the Fox report, making that connection potentially important for Democrats.

Drazan wants voters to focus on conditions they encounter at home rather than arguments about Washington.

She says Oregon’s economy, schools, and response to addiction require changes that Kotek has not delivered.

Those are campaign claims, not findings that every problem began or worsened during the governor’s term.

Voters can assess them through results, costs, and what each candidate proposes for the next four years.

The Democratic Governors Association also acknowledged the race’s competitiveness while expressing confidence in her victory.

That confidence now faces a more aggressive challenge from a Republican candidate who nearly won four years ago.

Drazan said the Republican Governors Association has begun investing in Oregon’s contest.
