A private exchange reportedly gave investigators an opening, turning scrutiny of old records into a search of an official’s home.
Now, the evidence trail reaches across family communications, seized devices, and immigration documents dating back three decades.
Texts recovered from Ilhan Omar’s sister’s phone helped secure the warrant for her Washington home, the New York Post reported.
Investigators had seized Sahra Noor’s phone earlier this year, before seeking judicial authorization to search the Minnesota Democrat’s residence.
The messages reportedly supplied evidence used to persuade a federal judge to approve the search.

Homeland Security Investigations agents searched Omar’s home Monday, taking her phone, passport, notebooks and personal computers.
The operation forms part of a criminal inquiry examining whether Omar and relatives misrepresented information in immigration paperwork.
The family entered the United States as refugees from Somalia in 1995, according to the reporting.

Omar has said she became a naturalized citizen in 2000, at age 17, through her father, Nur Omar Mohamed.
Sources described the investigation as focused on documents completed when she was still a child.
No charges have been filed, and the matter remains at the investigative and grand jury stage.
The Justice Department confirmed that agents acted under a warrant approved through the judicial process.
Homeland Security Investigations “executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice,” a spokesperson said.
“This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation,” the spokesperson added.
That statement confirms the search’s authorization without publicly resolving the suspected fraud or establishing anyone’s guilt.
Before the home search, investigators also collected DNA from discarded material in Omar’s trash, according to the report.
Former FBI special agent Tracy Walder discussed that investigative tactic with NewsNation, describing discarded material as readily obtainable.

The supplied reporting does not disclose DNA comparison results or establish what any collected sample ultimately demonstrated.
The distinction matters because collecting potential evidence and proving an allegation are separate steps.
Evidence from the search is expected to go before a federal grand jury in Minnesota.
Several relatives have already received subpoenas, widening the inquiry beyond the congresswoman’s own devices and records.

Those developments show investigators pursuing family communications and documentation alongside the original immigration applications.
Border czar Tom Homan has publicly acknowledged the scrutiny and said he flagged the issue months earlier.
Omar’s office, meanwhile, argues the investigation represents political retaliation rather than legitimate enforcement.
Spokeswoman Jackie Rogers declined to address the seizure of Noor’s phone directly, according to the supplied report.
“This is politically motivated and an escalation of Trump’s personal vendetta against her lasting over a decade,” Rogers said.
Rogers also accused Trump of spreading falsehoods to justify what she characterized as an abuse of power.
Those accusations challenge the administration’s motives, but they do not themselves resolve the questions surrounding the paperwork.
Likewise, judicial approval for a search does not settle the case against the person whose home was searched.

For the public, transparency requires separating confirmed procedural developments from allegations that prosecutors have yet to prove.
Noor now lives in Kenya and recently published a memoir titled “Salt in the Snow: A Somali Immigrant Story.”
She canceled a scheduled Rochester book event Thursday, citing a “family emergency,” the report said.
The reporting does not establish that she knowingly supplied evidence against Omar or voluntarily surrendered the seized phone.
National Review also described older allegations involving family identity and Omar’s 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.
Omar has denied claims that Elmi was her brother and that the marriage was intended to secure immigration benefits.
Those longstanding accusations should not be confused with charges announced in the current investigation, Fox News reported.
Sources previously alleged to the Post that Omar’s father misrepresented his identity upon entering the country.
