Authorities say the confrontation escalated after an armed suspect ignored commands to surrender his weapon.

Now, the case has brought a forceful response from a top prosecutor and an encouraging update about one victim’s recovery.

Investigators have also released details about the gun, recovered shell casings, and surveillance images documenting the encounter.

A Georgia National Guardsman was shot in the leg Sunday while troops tried to stop a fight in Washington, D.C.

The wounded service member has since been released from the hospital, according to a National Guard spokesperson.

Federal prosecutors announced charges Wednesday against Jerrell Lamont Jackson, 41, of Washington, over the October 18 shooting.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro described the confrontation as a brazen attack involving a repeat violent offender.

The incident unfolded around 11:10 p.m. in the 400 block of Eighth Street Southeast, in the Barracks Row neighborhood.

According to the Justice Department, Guard members assigned to patrol the corridor attempted to intervene when a fight broke out.

Prosecutors allege Jackson, who was involved in the fight, pulled a pistol and began shooting.

The troops ordered him to drop the firearm, according to the department’s account of the criminal complaint.

Instead, prosecutors say, he tried to flee while firing toward the National Guard members.

Three Guardsmen returned fire, striking Jackson, who they detained until Metropolitan Police Department officers arrived.

One Guardsman suffered a leg wound during the exchange, and emergency crews transported both wounded men to hospitals.

Authorities described both men’s injuries as non-life-threatening.

Investigators recovered a Taurus G2C 9mm pistol underneath a vehicle that Jackson had run behind, according to prosecutors.

Police also recovered at least 14 shell casings from the scene.

The Justice Department released surveillance images alongside its announcement of the charges, illustrating portions of the alleged confrontation.

One image shows the fight outside Cafe 8 while several people looked on.

Another shows people scattering after a gunshot, with one person running into a neighboring smoke shop.

Prosecutors described another image as showing the suspect apparently firing into that shop. Additional images show the suspect entering an alley and later holding a firearm behind a parked vehicle.

The department said one image shows him turning and pointing the weapon toward the Guardsmen. Those images accompany prosecutors’ allegations, which will be tested through the court process.

Jackson faces a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon. He also faces charges involving assault with a dangerous weapon and firearm possession during a violent crime or dangerous offense.

Pirro praised the troops and other personnel responding to the incident.

“The National Guard and our task force partners responded with discipline and courage, restoring order quickly,” she said.

She linked the response to the administration’s broader public safety campaign in the nation’s capital.

Pirro credited that effort with more than 18,000 arrests, nearly 2,200 illegal firearms seized and 28 missing children returned home.

Those figures were presented by the prosecutor as results of the broader operation, rather than this individual encounter.

President Donald Trump deployed National Guard personnel to Washington in August 2025 as part of his campaign against crime. Their continuing presence has generated political opposition and legal challenges, even as troops remain assigned to patrol city streets.

The Sunday shooting placed members of that force in direct danger while they were responding to a public disturbance. The Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Affairs Bureau Force Investigations Team is investigating the shooting.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia is prosecuting the case. Jackson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, CBS News reported.

For the wounded Guardsman, the immediate update is encouraging: he survived the shooting and has been discharged from the hospital.
