Ilhan Omar brings on Biden’s personal attorney Amy Jeffress

adrianoreid@hotmail.com - October 24, 2026

The legal eagles defending embattled “Squad” Rep. Ilhan Omar from prison or deportation include former President Biden’s “autopen” personal attorney and the white-shoe lawyer who quarterbacked both of President Trump’s impeachments.

The Somalia-born Omar’s defense duo boasts impressive lefty legal pedigrees, but neither specializes in immigration law — raising questions about whether the Minnesota Democrat is more concerned about her husband’s alleged $30 million fraudulent windfall than she is about her immigration status.

Amy Jeffress, a partner at boutique DC firm Hecker Fink, became Biden’s personal attorney in 2025, succeeding longtime confidant Bob Bauer.

She represented the gaffe-prone former president as he faced investigations into his use of an autopen to sign presidential pardons and legislation.

A former attorney with DC firm Arnold & Porter, she played a role in some of the most intense partisan battles involving Congress.

She did outside work as counsel for the House Jan. 6 committee, helping push to haul in officials through subpoena authority. She previously represented former FBI lawyer Lisa Page — one of the “FBI lovers” who wrote anti-Trump texts during the 2016 presidential campaign that lead to accusations of “deep state” political bias and her eventual resignation.

The other half of Omar’s legal squad is Joshua Matz, also a partner at Hecker Fink, who represented House Democrats during both Trump impeachments and served on the legal team of the House Jan. 6. committee.

He also represented Brown University, New York University and Columbia University in legal battles involving Trump administration executive orders that promote merit by targeting affirmative action and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies.

The probe into Omar’s immigration history and eyebrow-raising revisions to her financial disclosure forms is now being pursued by the US Attorney in DC, and comes as there was already deep suspicion around her in Congress, with financial questions persisting even after Omar amended her latest financial disclosure filings.

Omar, who claimed in an MS NOW interview that she lives “paycheck to paycheck” despite earning a $174,000 congressional salary, also said wasn’t allowed to phone her attorney for an hour after federal agents searched her home this month.

Court documents connected to the search of Omar’s DC home reference a prior alias, Nur Said Elmi — a detail that has drawn attention to investigators’ interest in her immigration history, due to allegations that first appeared on a Somali blog that ex husband Ahmed Nur Said Elmi is her brother.

Omar appeared this week in a video filmed in the back of a moving car, begging for cash for her legal defense.

“It is going to be a very expensive and challenging time and so we appreciate whether you’re able to send $5, $10, $20,” she said in the video Tuesday night.

A Post review of Omar’s campaign filings reveals no payments made to either the firm or the lawyers directly as of the Oct. 15 filing deadline.

Jeffress and Matz sent a seven-page letter to the Department of Justice last Friday, demanding the return of her passport, electronics and other seized property.

Trump, for his part, has made clear he intends to keep up the heat on Omar just as he has on some of Jeffress’ previous clients.

On Thursday night he called for her to “IMMEDIATELY” resign, saying she was sworn in under a different name different than her own.
