In this episode of The Truth About Health, Kristi Leigh examines the medical system that controls childbirth, the interventions treated as routine, and the parents and birth workers finding ways to step outside of it. She is joined by three guests: Gina Mundy, a nationally recognized trial attorney, bestselling author of Parent’s Guide to a Safer Childbirth, and host of the Childbirth Attorney podcast, who has spent more than two decades studying birth injury cases; Travis Stroud, known as the Doula Dude, who was the sole attendant at his wife’s planned free birth at home on Valentine’s Day 2024; and Emmy Robbin, a birth worker and somatic birth trauma coach who helps couples heal from difficult births.
The panel opens on the CDC’s cesarean rate holding at 32.4 percent and works backward from there. Gina identifies induction of labor with pitocin as the number one most common fact in birth injury cases, describing how it is increased too much, too fast, and ends in an emergency C-section. Emmy argues the deeper cause is a century of indoctrination that has led women to outsource their autonomy from the moment they pee on a stick, and she and Travis discuss the physiological role of oxytocin, the relaxin hormone, and why messing with physiology is what leads to being cut open.
The conversation then turns to due dates and ultrasound error rates, the Big Baby Trial and how its findings are used to justify inductions, the Cochrane evidence on doulas, and Montana’s move to license doulas, which the panel debates as protection versus control. Later segments cover VBAC success rates and uterine rupture risk, why hospitals stopped teaching vaginal breech delivery, twin births, and the trauma that fathers carry after a difficult birth, including the guilt and hidden anger that can strain a marriage. Gina closes with her top recommendations for parents: understand induction and pitocin, avoid having your water broken, and hire a good doula.
