Pentagon Appoints Former DOGE Official to Lead Key Artificial Intelligence Initiatives

- March 6, 2026

The U.S. Department of Defense has appointed computer scientist Gavin Kliger as its Chief Data Officer, placing him in charge of advancing the Pentagon’s artificial intelligence initiatives. Kliger previously worked with billionaire Elon Musk on efforts to reform government operations through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

According to a Pentagon social media post, Kliger’s role “places him at the center of the Department’s most ambitious AI efforts,” where he will oversee the alignment and execution of the department’s AI programs. His responsibilities will include working directly with leading artificial intelligence laboratories in the United States to support military operations and enhance technological capabilities for defense personnel.

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for additional comments on the appointment, and Kliger also did not respond to messages seeking a statement.

Kliger’s appointment comes amid increasing focus on the role of artificial intelligence within the U.S. defense strategy. The Pentagon has been expanding its AI adoption to improve data analysis, decision-making, and operational efficiency across military systems.

However, the appointment has also drawn attention due to Kliger’s past social media activity. Reports indicate that in posts between October 2024 and January 2025, he shared or amplified content from controversial online figures, including white supremacist Nick Fuentes and influencer Andrew Tate.

The leadership change comes during a period of heightened debate around artificial intelligence in the defense sector. Recently, tensions emerged between the Pentagon and AI firm Anthropic over restrictions on how its technology could be used by the military. The dispute eventually led the U.S. government to distance itself from the company and shift toward alternative AI providers such as OpenAI.

As the Pentagon accelerates its adoption of advanced AI systems, the appointment of a new Chief Data Officer signals the department’s intention to strengthen its technological capabilities and deepen collaboration with leading AI developers in the United States.
