President Donald Trump is downplaying a viral moment from this week’s G7 Leaders’ Summit, saying his comment declaring “I’m the boss” was intended as a joke and not a serious statement about world leaders.
Trump addressed the incident during a Friday interview with Axios reporter Marc Caputo.
The exchange came after a moment at the 52nd Group of Seven summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, which generated headlines around the world.

During a working session focused on economic growth, Trump arrived after other leaders had already taken their seats.
French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged Trump’s late arrival before the president entered the room.
As he approached the table, Trump looked at the assembled leaders and declared, “I’m the boss!”
The remark drew laughter from those in attendance.
Video of the moment quickly circulated online and prompted widespread discussion about whether Trump was making a serious statement or joking with fellow leaders.
During his interview with Axios, Trump said he clearly intended the comment as humor.

Asked how many of the leaders believed he was actually the boss, Trump replied, “All of ’em.”
He then immediately clarified that he was joking.
“But I was just being funny,” Trump told Axios.
The president said the unusual layout of the room inspired the remark.
According to Trump, the meeting was held around a large table designed for many more participants than were actually present.
“What happened is they were all sitting, and then I walked into the room, and it was just sort of funny because there was a very long table, but there was only seven of ’em,” Trump said. “The table was meant for, like, 30 people.”
Trump described the summit as a successful event and said he achieved his objectives during meetings with world leaders.
Calling the gathering “tremendous” and “very dominant,” Trump said he “got what I wanted” from the summit.
The president also described the setting that led to the comment. He said the large table created what looked like a podium area at one end of the room.
Trump said he looked at the assembled leaders and decided to make a lighthearted remark.
“So, the whole end of the table looked like, almost, the perfect podium-type set-up,” Trump said.
He noted that several world leaders and invited guests were present for the session.
Among them was Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Trump referred to Modi as a “great guy” during the interview. The president said he viewed the moment as playful banter among leaders.
“But I walked in there, these leaders, and I just looked at ’em,” Trump said.
“I said, ‘I’m the boss, and you remember.’”
“You know that was done as a joke,” he said. “This thing got carried all over the world. I can’t believe it. I was just being cute, funny. I wasn’t trying to be the boss.”

The G7 summit brought together leaders from the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
Several additional world leaders attended portions of the summit as guests.
The annual gathering focused on economic growth, trade, international security, and other global issues.
While substantive policy discussions dominated much of the summit, Trump’s off-the-cuff comment became one of the most talked-about moments from the event.
The president’s explanation is unlikely to end the debate over the remark.
Supporters viewed it as an example of Trump’s humor and confidence.
Critics argued the comment reflected his approach to international diplomacy.
