President Donald Trump issued one of his broadest economic warnings yet Wednesday, dramatically escalating the administration’s pressure campaign against Iran and threatening consequences for countries that help Tehran evade American restrictions.
Trump announced what he described as an “Economic D-Day” against Iran, promising an unprecedented effort to isolate the country financially while warning governments and businesses around the world against providing Tehran with an economic lifeline.

“Today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale,” he added.
Trump made clear that the campaign would extend beyond Iran itself, warning that countries allowing their financial institutions, businesses, airports or government entities to assist Tehran could face economic retaliation from the United States.

“I am also announcing that ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences,” Trump said.
The president specifically identified oil smuggling, currency swap arrangements, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and front companies as potential methods of circumventing the economic pressure.

“Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies — It all needs to stop NOW,” Trump wrote. “You know who you are.”
Trump also called on U.S. allies to participate in the effort, comparing the economic campaign to the Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II.
“This will be an ECONOMIC D-DAY, and we need all of our Allies to stand with the United States of America to isolate, and defeat, the Iran threat,” Trump said.
“These maniacs are on the ropes, and these HISTORIC MEASURES will cripple them and their ability to project terror worldwide,” he added.
Trump portrayed Iran as increasingly weakened by the American campaign, claiming that its navy and air force have been destroyed and that key production facilities have been reduced to “rubble.”
He also described Iran’s currency as “worthless” and said the country itself “is hanging by a thread.”
The announcement represents another major escalation in Washington’s campaign against Tehran, which has included a U.S.-led naval blockade aimed at restricting Iranian oil exports and increasing pressure on the Iranian government.
Iran has responded by accusing Washington of relying on economic coercion when diplomacy fails.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei earlier this week accused the United States of having an “addiction” to sanctions, according to Yemen’s state-run news agency.

Iranian officials have also warned neighboring Gulf countries against assisting American military operations.
But Tehran suffered a significant regional economic setback Wednesday when the United Arab Emirates severed financial and economic ties with Iran, citing the country’s military escalation and incoming missile attacks.
Trump has simultaneously increased pressure surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, the strategically vital waterway through which a significant share of the world’s oil supplies traditionally moves.
On Monday, Trump threatened military action against Oman if it interfered with efforts to reopen the strait.
The administration’s pressure campaign is also beginning to affect Iranian commerce, according to outside analysts.

Kasra Aarabi, an Iran expert, said sources inside the country were reporting that the U.S. blockade was having a significant impact on Iranian oil sales and disrupting supply chains connected to China. Those claims have not been independently verified.

Despite the increasingly confrontational rhetoric, Trump has not completely closed the door on renewed negotiations with Tehran.

“Maybe at some point,” Trump said when asked whether talks between the United States and Iran could eventually resume.
Trump has also suggested that the Strait of Hormuz could become less strategically important over time as countries develop alternative energy sources and transportation routes.
The combination of economic isolation, restrictions on Iranian oil exports and pressure on countries doing business with Tehran marks an effort by the administration to expand the conflict beyond the battlefield and force Iran to choose between continued confrontation and a return to negotiations.
