Charlie Kirk built his entire public life around talking to people and debating issues.

He went onto college campuses, sat across from people who disagreed with him, and argued his case in public. That was the whole model… show up, take the question, make the argument, and keep the conversation going. He was one of the most peaceful so-called “activists” out there.

And they killed him.

Now, an alarming new report has surfaced. According to a leaked British government memo, one of the things UK counter-extremism officials started watching in the aftermath of Charlie’s murder was whether Kirk’s supporters would use his assassination to push “pro-free speech narratives.”

While their country is in shambles, with migrants raping and pillaging, the UK government is worried about Kirk supporters pushing for free speech.

The memo was reportedly produced by RICU, the Research, Information and Communications Unit, a Home Office counter-extremism operation that monitors extremist and terrorist content.

And the deeper you go down this rabbit hole, the stranger the whole thing becomes.

The memo was drawn up very quickly after Kirk’s assassination and circulated through Whitehall.

Officials were looking at reactions from groups they categorized as “Extreme Right-Wing,” including Turning Point UK, and assessing how Kirk’s death might be used politically.

Apparently, they didn’t have any concerns over the violent trans-supporters and left-wing activists who were celebrating his assassination.

Following Kirk’s murder, the Research, Information and Communications Unit (RICU), a government counter-extremism and terrorism unit, began monitoring thousands of social media channels, gauging the reaction of what they describe as “Extreme Right Wing” (ERW) activists.

Published here for the first time, a memo generated by RICU reveals that officials assessed that “Extreme Right-Wing” activists, including Tommy Robinson, would use Kirk’s assassination to “push pro-free speech narratives”.

Counter-extremism agents assessed that Right-wing extremists would use Kirk’s death to “encourage more radical action” and “abandon political moderation in favour of more radical political stances”.

Meanwhile, RICU characterised the Left-wing online response to Kirk’s assassination as “moderate” and largely “factual reporting”, despite thousands of Left-wing activists celebrating the shooting.

Since when did arguing for free speech become something a counter-extremism unit needed to flag?

According to the investigation, it was circulated across the Home Office, Foreign Office, Cabinet Office, and police.

A memo entitled ‘RICU Event Response: Charlie Kirk Assassination’ was circulated across Whitehall, including to officials in the Home Office, Foreign Office and Cabinet Office, as well as police officers, on 11 September 2025, the day after Kirk was shot.

The memo was classified as “Official Sensitive”.

RICU assessed that American and British ERW audiences would present the murder as “a shared attack on the ERW movement and free speech activism more generally”, and monitored the response of Turning Point UK, the British arm of Charlie Kirk’s American organisation.

“There is nothing ‘extreme’ about ‘pushing pro free speech narratives,’” said Sarah Rogers, the United States Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy, who served as Kirk’s attorney on First Amendment issues and has led the Trump administration’s advocacy against censorship in Europe.

“That’s why censorship by governments proves so unpopular.”

Free speech was Charlie Kirk’s entire thing. He built a powerful movement around open debate and publicly challenging people who thought he was wrong.

So when a foreign government counter-extremism group starts monitoring his supporters, people are naturally going to wonder why the definition of “extremism” has gotten so loosey-goosey.

The only reason RICU exists is to monitor and analyze extremist and terrorist content, and after major incidents it can examine huge amounts of online activity. Kirk’s assassination should’ve triggered that kind of response, but the focus should’ve been on violent trans and trans supporters, not free speech.

RICU is a government unit based in the Home Office that monitors and analyses terrorist and extremist content and supports government counter-terrorism communications.

Founded in 2007, RICU has stirred controversy over its role in coordinating ‘controlled spontaneity’ campaigns in the aftermath of terrorist attacks, including pre-planned messaging, vigils and demonstrations intended to shape the public’s response to terrorism.

Following major terrorist events, RICU analyses tens of thousands of social media channels to monitor the responses of those it classes as extremists.

Charlie Kirk’s assassination prompted a RICU response, investigating messages from “Extreme Right-Wing” (ERW), “Left-Wing and Single Issue” (LASI), and “UK Islamist Terrorist Supporters” (UK-ITS).

The memo reveals that RICU identified 2,000 posts from what it described as global “ERW audiences” discussing Kirk’s assassination, with most appearing within an hour of the attack.

Officials described the reaction as “highly emotionally charged”.

This was a formal government counter-extremism response to the assassination of a peaceful American political activist.

Do governments have legitimate reasons to watch for actual threats after a political assassination? Absolutely. But does “pushing” for free speech really belong anywhere near the extremism category?

No.

Maybe Britain should worry less about people defending the right to speak freely and spend a little more time asking why they’ve invited invaders from third-world countries into their country to terrorize their people.
