Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced scrutiny during Friday’s solemn Ground Zero remembrance ceremony.
Photographs showed the progressive Democrats laughing while relatives continued reading names of victims killed in the September 11 attacks.
The images created jarring optics during a ceremony centered on grief, sacrifice, and honoring nearly 3,000 murdered Americans.

However, photographs cannot establish what prompted their laughter or prove either politician reacted to any victim’s name.
The moment came during the 25th anniversary commemoration of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against the United States.
Al Qaeda terrorists hijacked four passenger jets, striking the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed, including firefighters, police officers, emergency personnel, airline crews, passengers, and other civilians.
At Ground Zero, relatives again read victims’ names aloud, continuing one of America’s most solemn remembrance traditions.
This year’s ceremony added a seventh moment of silence honoring people who later died from illnesses linked to September 11.

Mamdani’s presence had already sparked controversy because some victims’ relatives publicly asked the Democratic mayor to stay away.
A petition urging Mamdani to skip the ceremony collected more than 102,000 signatures before being delivered to City Hall.
Petition supporters insisted their objections concerned Mamdani’s political associations and decisions rather than his Muslim faith or ethnic background.
“It’s not about his religion or where he came from,” widow Cheri Sparacio said before the anniversary.
“It is strictly about the policies that he has today,” Sparacio added while explaining the families’ objections.

Critics objected to Mamdani appointing Ramzi Kassem as City Hall’s chief counsel after Kassem represented a Guantánamo detainee.
Kassem represented Ahmed al-Darbi, an al Qaeda member convicted over the 2002 bombing of the French tanker Limburg.
Families also criticized Mamdani’s association with progressive streamer Hasan Piker, who previously said America “deserved 9/11.”
Mamdani has called Piker’s notorious remark “objectionable and reprehensible,” distancing himself from that inflammatory statement.
Former New York Gov. George Pataki and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani also opposed Mamdani attending Friday’s Ground Zero ceremony.

Despite that fierce disagreement, Giuliani and Mamdani shook hands when they encountered one another at the memorial Friday.
Mamdani defended attending, arguing the anniversary should remain focused on victims, grieving families, survivors, and first responders.
He previously described September 11 as “the darkest day in our city’s history” while discussing the anniversary.
Days earlier, Mamdani signed executive orders establishing September 11 as a citywide Day of Remembrance and Service.
“Never Forget is not a slogan,” Mamdani said while announcing the city’s new annual observance.
“It is a commitment that we must carry forward through action,” the mayor added about honoring September 11’s legacy.
His administration also released 170,000 pages of records concerning toxic air around Ground Zero after the towers collapsed.

Mamdani said more people have now died from September 11-related illnesses than were killed during the attacks themselves.
Former Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden also attended the lower Manhattan ceremony.
Vice President JD Vance represented the Trump administration there while President Donald Trump attended the Pentagon commemoration.
Trump said September 11 displayed “the terrible power of hate” but also demonstrated America’s ability to overcome evil.
He praised “the even greater power of the American spirit to endure and prevail and to win.”
Trump also recalled the extraordinary national unity after the attacks, declaring, “We were all New Yorkers that day.”
Against that emotional backdrop, Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez laughing together predictably drew criticism from conservatives watching the ceremony.
Conservatives argued public officials should maintain solemn conduct throughout an event built around victims’ names and grieving relatives.
