A Democrat pulled off an upset in one of Pennsylvania’s most reliably Republican state House districts this week, narrowly capturing a seat that President Donald Trump carried by more than 18 percentage points in 2024.
However, Republicans will have a chance to regain it when voters return to the polls in November.

Democrat Brandon Dukes defeated Republican Scott Timko in Tuesday’s special election for Pennsylvania’s 12th House District in Butler County, prevailing by fewer than 100 votes in an unusually low-turnout contest.
The result ended a Republican hold on the district that had lasted since 1999 and raised concerns for the GOP ahead of the November midterms.
The upset is particularly striking given the district’s recent voting history.

Trump carried the district by more than 18 points in the 2024 presidential election, while former Republican state Rep. Stephenie Scialabba won her race there by roughly 30 points that same year.
Scialabba’s resignation earlier this year created the vacancy that triggered Tuesday’s special election.

But there is one major factor Republicans are pointing to: turnout.
Fewer than one-third of registered voters participated in the special election, producing an electorate dramatically smaller than the one expected for November’s general election.
That gives Republicans reason to believe the political makeup of Tuesday’s voters may differ from what happens when substantially more voters head to the polls this fall.
The Pennsylvania House Republican Campaign Committee said Wednesday that the party is already preparing for the rematch.
“The General Election starts today with Scott Timko reaching out to voters, building a winning coalition, and holding Brandon Dukes accountable for his extreme positions that he continues to hide from voters.”
The GOP statement signals Republicans have no intention of conceding the district permanently and plan to make Dukes’ political positions a major focus of the fall campaign. The special-election reporting did not detail which specific positions Republicans were referring to.
Pennsylvania House Republican Leader Jesse Topper also sought to put the loss in perspective, describing the outcome as “disappointing but unsurprising” while pointing to changing demographics, the summertime election date and the unpredictable nature of special-election turnout.
“There is much more yet to unfold in the final months of the 2026 election cycle and we will continue carrying out vision for positive growth in Pennsylvania through November,” he said.

This comes as President Donald Trump and Elon Musk have repaired a once-shattered relationship that appeared beyond saving.
Now, Musk, the world’s richest man, is preparing to pour significant resources into helping Republicans hold Congress this fall.
Nearly a year after Musk publicly blasted Trump and their alliance collapsed in a spectacular social media feud, the two men shared a friendly flight aboard Air Force One to China in May.
According to people on the plane, Musk discussed plans to build new factories in the United States while Trump asked about one of Musk’s young sons and recalled a recent space-launch video.

Musk even reminisced with White House advisers about the excitement of the 2024 campaign.
Then came the news Trump’s team had long hoped to hear: Musk intends to aid Republicans in the November midterms.
People familiar with the strategy say the Tesla and SpaceX leader plans to spend at least $100 million on a voter-turnout operation aimed at keeping the GOP in control of Congress.
The unexpected assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who had worked in his final months to bring the two powerful figures closer together, also helped move the process forward.

Yet the two men now speak roughly once a month, discussing artificial intelligence, China, and global events, according to people with knowledge of the conversations.
The renewed partnership is important for both.
Musk’s financial muscle and influence on X give Republicans a major edge in a critical election cycle.
