Democrat Arrested For Storming Govt Building, Pulling Gun On Police

Tevin McLeod - June 2, 2026

A Hawaii Democratic congressional candidate allegedly stormed a government building and drew a gun on officials, where he was quickly put in handcuffs.

Kirill Basin, 40, is accused of threatening two Maui County workers during the harrowing event at 9:30 a.m. Friday before departing the facility in Wailuku, according to Civil Beat.

A liberal candidate for Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District was detained at his home at 12:30 p.m. on a charge of first-degree terrorist threatening.

Basin strangely alleged in an Instagram post on Thursday, the day before his detention, that cops tortured him for 14 hours.

“This is the lawsuit I served today. It basically outlines how 3 police officers tortured me for 14 hours,” he wrote. “That’s the gist. It’ll never happen to anyone again.”

The lawsuit alleged officers subjected Basin to “prolonged and deliberate infliction of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse” while in custody.

Court records reveal that he filed the complaint himself and has no attorney representing him.

The behavior of the basin in the days before Friday’s incident became increasingly irregular.

Two days before his arrest, police claimed, he was removed by police from a town hall meeting in South Maui following a disagreement with Council member Tom Cook and his staff.

A petition filed Friday afternoon says the man was driven out of the town hall and encountered Cook’s executive assistant in the parking lot, causing police to get involved again.

The assistant, Jared Agtunong, filed a petition for a temporary restraining order against Basin just after 3 p.m. Friday.

According to the petition, Basin had also sent Agtunong a series of cryptic and explicit texts and called him.

“I did not answer Basin’s phone call, but he left a message telling me that I’m a piece of trash, said I should think of my family, and insisted I call him back,” Agtunong wrote.

“In additional texts sent on the same day, Basin wished me luck with prison, and then at 9:00 p.m., Basin’s text said ‘you’re f–ked,’” he continued.

A judge granted Agtunong’s temporary restraining order petition within two hours of filing.

On May 2, Basin was arrested for disorderly conduct, although few extra details were released.

Earlier this month, an Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, man running as a Democrat for the U.S. Senate is facing accusations of making threats to kill President Donald Trump and a member of Congress.

An FBI spokesperson confirmed that Federal Bureau of Investigation agents arrested Raymond Chandler in Pittsburgh, along with the United States Secret Service.

Court documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, obtained by local media, outline the alleged threatening statements authorities say Chandler made.

According to the affidavit, Chandler reportedly left an unidentified member of Congress a voicemail on April 18, during which he issued a slew of threats.

The affidavit also stated that he followed up by saying this must happen because “wealth concentration has gotten so bad in this country.”

The filing also notes that on April 29, Chandler left another voicemail for an unidentified member of Congress, saying he wanted to kill him.

He then said that President Trump is “a liar among all liars. He’s a great deceiver. He’s the antichrist.”

The congressmember’s representatives eventually reached out to authorities after Chandler’s voicemails became increasingly violent rhetoric aimed at Trump, members of Congress, and ICE.

Just hours before his arrest, Chandler posted a YouTube video as part of his campaign for the U.S. Senate seat in Pennsylvania.

In the video, titled “It’s Time to Tax the Billionaires,” he announced his intention to challenge Senator John Fetterman in the 2028 election.
