White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was hit with a brutal fact check over her latest claim about Americans’ support for the Iran war.
Leavitt shared a press release from the White House with the title, “Americans Agree that Operation Epic Fury Is an Overwhelming Success,” on social media on Thursday. However, the press release cited a number of polls that showed majorities of Republicans and MAGA-aligned Americans supporting the war.
Social media users quickly pointed out that Leavitt’s press release was misleading because most polls show a majority of all Americans opposing the war.
“She is linking to an article showing only MAGA Republicans support the war, and then claiming ‘Americans agree’ with it. Her own link shows her to be a liar. She’s a proud and open liar. Reporters should treat her as such,” journalist Mehdi Hasan wrote on X.
Another user responded to her post with: “NO THE HELL WE DO NOT!!! STOP GASLIGHTING US!”
Her post also received a community note on X, which stated that the polls mentioned only refer to “MAGA Republicans or Republicans being in favor of the war, not the broader American public.”
She doubled down on her claim on Friday, emphasizing that there is no divide among MAGA Republicans when it comes to support for the Iran war. Despite some critics’ claims that the war has “shattered” MAGA, many polls show that most MAGA Republicans support the Iran war.
“As I’ve said repeatedly, Americans trust President Trump as their Commander-in-Chief and support his efforts to eliminate terrorist threats and keep us safe. There is no ‘MAGA fracturing,’ no matter how many times the media tries to claim otherwise,” Leavitt wrote on X.
To support her claim, she shared a poll from Politico, which found that 70% of Trump voters supported the strikes in Iran. On the other hand, 56% of former Vice President Kamala Harris’ voters opposed them.
