A years-old video featuring Michigan’s new socialist Democratic Senate nominee has suddenly resurfaced and is generating a wave of reactions just months before Election Day.
The clip has become the latest flashpoint in an already closely watched Senate race, with supporters and critics offering sharply different interpretations of what was said.

The controversy quickly spread across social media, where political commentators, elected officials and campaign operatives weighed in.
While some argued the remarks spoke for themselves, others contended they were being taken out of context.

The clip, highlighted Friday by The Midwesterner, shows El-Sayed walking through Mackinac Island while discussing the governor’s official summer residence.
“I hate Mackinac so much,” El-Sayed said in the video.

“It’s funny cause, like, if we win, this is gonna be, like, the summer home,” he added before continuing, “I’m just gonna be like every time I’ve ever come here. I’ve hated it. Why am I here?”
The video gained traction on social media Thursday, drawing criticism from several conservative commentators and political figures.
Federalist Editor-in-Chief Mollie Hemingway wrote on X that the comments reflected broader concerns she has about Democratic leaders.
OutKick founder Clay Travis, who said he became engaged on Mackinac Island, praised the destination and questioned how anyone could dislike northern Michigan during the summer.
Former Trump adviser Steve Cortes also criticized El-Sayed’s remarks, while Commentary magazine editor John Podhoretz and National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesperson Sarah Gallagher joined others expressing disapproval.
Former Michigan Republican gubernatorial nominee Tudor Dixon also weighed in, telling Fox News Digital that Mackinac Island represents an important part of Michigan’s culture and history.
Not everyone agreed with the criticism.
Journalist Brad LaPlante argued on X that the clip was being viewed without its broader context.

According to LaPlante, El-Sayed was referring specifically to the Mackinac Policy Conference, an annual gathering of business and political leaders that El-Sayed has previously criticized as giving influential insiders greater access to policymakers than ordinary voters.
Others disputed that explanation, arguing the video plainly showed El-Sayed expressing his dislike for the island itself.
Michigan Young Republicans board member James Asher questioned that interpretation in a post on X, responding directly to LaPlante’s defense of the comments.
Fox News Digital reported that it contacted El-Sayed’s campaign seeking comment but did not receive a response before publication.

However, El-Sayed later responded to one of the viral social media posts.
Replying to a post from the account End Wokeness, El-Sayed wrote, “Not sure about ‘End Wokeness,’ but I don’t think the most ‘American place in MI’ can be a place that…bans cars.”
Mackinac Island has long been considered one of Michigan’s most recognizable destinations.
Motor vehicles have been largely prohibited on the island since the late 19th century, with residents and visitors traveling primarily by bicycle, horse-drawn carriage or on foot.
