Musk-Led DOGE Shuts Down After 18 Months Of Sweeping US Government Cuts

The United States Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the controversial cost-cutting agency led by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has officially been dissolved, bringing to an end an 18-month programme that reshaped the federal workforce and triggered widespread political, legal and labour disputes.

DOGE formally ceased operations on July 4, 2026, in line with the timeline set out when the agency was created under President Donald Trump’s administration.

Trump unveiled the initiative in November 2024 after winning the presidential election, naming Musk to head the new agency. Following his inauguration in January 2025, Trump signed an executive order establishing DOGE and tasked it with improving government efficiency by eliminating waste, fraud and abuse across federal agencies.

Under Musk’s leadership, DOGE implemented sweeping reforms, including major restructuring at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), as part of an aggressive drive to reduce government spending and shrink the size of the federal bureaucracy.

According to the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, more than 260,000 federal employees exited government service in 2025 through layoffs, early retirement programmes, deferred resignation schemes and a government-wide hiring freeze.

However, relations between Musk and Trump deteriorated after the Tesla chief publicly criticised the administration’s flagship spending proposal, the “Big Beautiful Bill.” Musk accused the president of undermining the cost-cutting reforms pursued under DOGE, prompting a highly publicised fallout between the two. He announced his resignation from the agency a day after making the remarks.

Despite its stated objective of improving government efficiency, DOGE remained one of the most contentious initiatives of the Trump administration.

Labour unions and civil rights groups have urged Congress to investigate the agency following reports that it had access to sensitive government databases, including records maintained by the Treasury Department, the Social Security Administration and federal payment systems.

The administration has also faced a wave of legal challenges over DOGE’s operations. More than a dozen lawsuits have been filed contesting mass layoffs, the cancellation of federal grants and the closure of several government-funded programmes.

With DOGE now dissolved, federal agencies have begun rebuilding their workforce. Government figures show that more than 104,000 federal vacancies were advertised during the first five months of 2026, signalling a reversal of the aggressive downsizing that defined the agency’s short-lived existence.
