A former employee of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) was arrested in California as part of the federal government’s case against the controversial left-wing organization.
The SPLC has been charged with financial crimes, including fraud, for allegedly funneling donation money to the same extremists that it claimed to be fighting against, or “manufacturing racism to justify its existence,” in the words of then-acting Attorney General Todd Blanche back in April when the indictment was announced.
On Wednesday, 59-year-old Heidi Beirich of Palm Springs, who previously ran the organization’s project that tracked hate groups, was taken into custody after a federal grand jury in Montgomery, Ala. returned a second superseding indictment adding her as a defendant “to the previously charged count of conspiracy to commit concealment money laundering,” according to a Justice Department news release.

“Beirich allegedly ‘oversaw payments of donors’ money’ to people inside of these hate groups, according to an indictment unsealed Wednesday. She also allegedly shared a bank account with one of those sources, which included funds from the SPLC’s payments,” CNN reported.
“The second superseding indictment, which was unsealed today, charges Heidi L. Beirich, 59, of Palm Springs, California, along with the SPLC, with new charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to submit false statements to a federally insured bank. The new indictment also adds Beirich as a defendant to the previously charged count of conspiracy to commit concealment money laundering and charges the SPLC with an additional count of concealment money laundering. Beirich was served with an arrest warrant this morning in the Central District of California and is expected to make her initial appearance in federal court there this afternoon,” read the statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama.
“As alleged, Heidi Beirich was at the center of our ongoing investigation into SPLC and their previously alleged criminal activity – where SPLC knowingly misled donors, who believed their money was being used to dismantle violent extremist organizations – when in fact, part of those donations were instead being used to pay senior leadership within those extremist groups,” FBI Director Kash Patel wrote in a post to X.

Now in charge of the DOJ, Blanche commented on the arrest during an unrelated news conference on Wednesday.
“I think, as alleged in the indictment, this individual participated in the scheme as alleged,” the attorney general said. “I believe she was part of the effort to open bank accounts and complete fictitious companies names and make payments that to individuals for reasons that were not, that were not accurate as described.”
“This is exactly what we said would happen in a case like this, which is that our investigators and the US attorneys and the agents working the case will keep on working it even after the initial indictment,” Blanche added.
“Taking on violent hate and extremist groups is among the most dangerous work there is, and we believe it is also among the most important work we do. The actions taken by the DOJ will not shake our resolve,” the SPLC said in a statement to CNN.
“We believe the charges against her and the SPLC are politically motivated, and Dr. Beirich has been targeted in this case because of the important work she has done to combat hate groups and extremists,” Beirich’s attorney, Michael J. Proctor, said in a statement.
“The indictment unsealed today reflects the continued work of federal investigators and prosecutors in examining this alleged scheme,” U.S. Attorney Thomas Govan said. “We look forward to presenting the evidence in court and allowing the judicial process to determine the facts and the defendants’ responsibility for the alleged crimes.”
“The SPLC is manufacturing racism to justify its existence,” Blanche said in April. “Using donor money to allegedly profit off Klansmen cannot go unchecked. This Department of Justice will hold the SPLC and every other fraudulent organization operating with the same deceptive playbook accountable. No entity is above the law.”
