Former Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky apparently suffered some sort of medical emergency a couple of weeks ago and has remained hospitalized, according to various reports.
The trouble is, however, no one who should know is talking about his current condition or whether he is still fit to serve the remainder of his term, which ends in January.
Questions about McConnell’s health intensified during CNN’s NewsNight with Abby Phillip, where Democratic strategist Mike Nellis said Republicans should be more transparent about the longtime senator’s condition following weeks of hospitalization.
Nellis dismissed assurances from Republican allies that McConnell remains engaged.
“If Scott Jennings and Thune and everybody else could have a 20-minute phone call with Mitch McConnell, he should be able to shoot a 60-second proof-of-life video to show us that he’s okay,” Nellis said.
Earlier on Tuesday, Jennings posted on the X platform that he had directly spoken with McConnell.
He added that if McConnell is unable to perform his duties, “he should resign right now,” pointing to Kentucky’s August 3 deadline that could affect the timing of a special Senate election.
Even Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) does not know McConnell’s condition. He sent a letter on Wednesday to the senator inquiring about his health status.
McConnell, 84, has remained hospitalized since June 14 for an undisclosed medical condition.
His office has said he is recovering and continues to monitor Senate business, while Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and other Republican leaders have said they recently spoke with him at length in an effort to address growing speculation about his health.
As President Donald Trump and Republicans prepare for the 2026 midterm elections, questions surrounding McConnell’s condition have remained a topic of discussion in Washington.
Seems unprecedented.

Al Cross, a veteran Kentucky political journalist who has interviewed McConnell extensively in recent weeks, said the senator’s office has disclosed few details about the medical emergency, a lack of information that has fueled rumors and heightened public speculation about his health.
In recent months, he has frequently been seen using a wheelchair while traveling through the Senate’s hallways.
When walking into the Senate chamber, he is often accompanied by aides or members of his security detail who assist him as he moves through the building, the outlet noted.
McConnell’s office announced on June 14 that the Kentucky Republican had been hospitalized that morning and was “receiving excellent care,” but it did not disclose the reason for his admission or provide details about the seriousness of his condition.
Conservative activist Laura Loomer cited a “high level source close to the White House” in a Monday post on X, writing that that McConnell’s health condition is much worse than anyone knows and is “not coming back” to the Senate.
McConnell, however, has not cast a vote in the Senate since June 11.
On June 12, just two days before McConnell was hospitalized, Shanghai Jiao Tong University announced that his wife, former Trump administration Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, had visited the campus, marking her 12th trip to the university over the past 45 years.
During the visit, Chao and her father donated several historical photographs to the university’s Ruth Mulan Chu Chao Memorial Hall, which is named in honor of Chao’s late mother, according to the university, WLKY reported.
The university said the Chao family has maintained longstanding ties to the institution through decades of philanthropic support, including contributions that helped fund Mulan Hall.
On June 16, two days after McConnell’s hospitalization, the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs announced that Chao met with its president, Wu Ken, in Beijing, WLKY noted further.
The organization said the two discussed U.S.-China relations and “other issues of common interest.”
The following day, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the United States announced that Chao met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng during her visit.
Chinese officials did not indicate that Chao’s trip involved any official U.S. government business.
