Stay up to date with live coverage of the Trump administration and national politics Tuesday, with results from primary elections in Texas, Arkansas and North Carolina coming in.
The heated race between Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Sen. John Cornyn is heading to a May 26 runoff election after neither candidate hit the required 50% of votes.
Former Yankees World Series great Mark Teixeira won the GOP House primary race in Texas’ 21st Congressional District. The first baseman, who started his career with the Texas Rangers before helping the Bronx Bombers win the 2009 World Series, is running to succeed Rep. Chip Roy.
Meanwhile, firebrand Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crocket left her own Senate primary watch party after votes in Dallas County were delayed. When the state’s Supreme Court ruled that ballots cast after 7 p.m. needed to be separated from previous votes, she promptly accused the GOP of “cheating” and “specifically targeting” blue voters.
Crockett’s rival, Rep. James Talarico was ahead of Crockett, 51.6% to 41.7%, and Republicans immediately aired their first attack video with footage of him declaring, “God is nonbinary.”
The winner of their race will face either Cornyn or Paxton in November.
In North Carolina, former Democratic Gov. Roy Moore won his primary to potentially flip retiring Republican Sen. Thom Tillis’ seat. He’ll face off against former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Whatley in November.
Earlier in the day, President Trump met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House for bilateral talks, where Merz assured him that their countries are “on the same page” about regime change in Iran.
Merz was the first European leader to visit Trump after “Operation Epic Fury” began in the Middle Eastern country over the weekend, killing its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and dozens of his top henchmen.
