Republican John Deaton secured the Massachusetts GOP nomination for U.S. Senate Tuesday night, giving the Marine veteran, trial attorney, and political outsider a clear path into November.
Deaton will face off in November against longtime progressive Sen. Ed Markey or Rep. Seth Moulton.

That race has not yet been called.
The Massachusetts Republican Party unified behind Deaton well before Election Day, endorsing him through the state committee last year and again backing him at the party’s April convention, where he declared that “One-party rule is hurting people.”

Deaton’s campaign has embraced a “People Over Politics” message, portraying the former Marine Corps captain as a working-class-focused alternative to career politicians in Washington and emphasizing his background as a father, cancer survivor, businessman, and successful trial lawyer.
“I’m in this fight for you and for every working American who is tired of politicians pandering to special interests,” Deaton says on his campaign website, adding that his loyalty is to “Massachusetts, and America—not to a party, an agenda, or a person.”

That independent streak is especially important in overwhelmingly Democratic Massachusetts, where Deaton has deliberately resisted being defined as a traditional party-line Republican.
During a June debate with Moulton, Deaton argued that Massachusetts needs somebody willing to “stand up for America and working people.”

Deaton has embraced several positions that align closely with conservative priorities, particularly on immigration, energy, government spending, and regulation.
On immigration, Deaton supports expanding legal immigration while demanding “zero tolerance” for illegal immigration, has attacked sanctuary policies in Massachusetts, and rejects Democratic calls to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement as another political “slogan” reminiscent of the 2020 “defund the police” movement.
On energy, Deaton opposes the Green New Deal and argues Massachusetts families are being crushed by unnecessarily high electricity costs, while advocating deregulation and greater use of nuclear power, Canadian hydropower, and emerging technologies rather than relying heavily on offshore wind.

His economic platform calls for reducing Washington spending, balancing the budget, attacking inflation, and cutting regulatory barriers that he says have helped make housing increasingly unaffordable across Massachusetts.
Deaton has also made congressional reform a centerpiece of his campaign through his proposed “Clean Hands Act,” which would seek term limits of three House terms and two Senate terms, ban lawmakers from trading stocks, cryptocurrency, or commodities, impose a lifetime lobbying ban, and require major legislation to be publicly available for 72 hours before a vote.
The Republican has personally pledged to serve no more than two Senate terms if elected.

On healthcare, Deaton supports lowering prescription-drug costs, expanding price transparency and increasing access without creating a larger federal bureaucracy, while his campaign has also targeted pharmacy benefit managers that he argues drive up prices for patients.
His foreign-policy position is similarly America-first in tone, with Deaton saying he would not approve additional money for Israel, Ukraine or another foreign country unless supporters could prove the spending serves the interests of Americans and Massachusetts residents.
Deaton also remains one of the nation’s most recognizable cryptocurrency advocates, having built a national following through his legal work involving digital assets and government regulation before launching his political career.

Tuesday represents Deaton’s second attempt to capture a Massachusetts Senate seat after he challenged Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren in 2024, losing roughly 60%-40% in a state where Republicans traditionally face an enormous statewide disadvantage.
His November opponent will emerge from the far more contentious Democratic primary, where 80-year-old Markey, one of Washington’s longest-serving progressive lawmakers, is attempting to hold off the 47-year-old Moulton.
