Poll: Paxton Leading Talarico in Texas U.S. Senate Race

Tevin McLeod - October 16, 2026

Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has edged ahead of Democrat James Talarico in two fresh polls this week, offering Republicans encouraging news.

An InsiderAdvantage survey released Thursday placed Paxton at 49 percent and Talarico at 48 percent in their contest.

The result provides Republicans encouragement as politically important Texas prepares for early voting beginning October 19.

InsiderAdvantage surveyed 1,200 likely voters and reported a margin of error of 2.83 percentage points for its findings.

A separate Quantus Insights survey released Tuesday also showed Paxton narrowly ahead, supporting arguments that momentum remains possible.

That survey measured Paxton at 47.2 percent and Talarico at 46.7 percent, an advantage of half a point.

Two recent surveys, therefore, place Paxton narrowly ahead, although other polling continues showing the Democrat competitive or slightly leading.

Texas Democrats have not won a statewide election in decades, a historical obstacle their nominee must overcome this November.

President Donald Trump carried Texas by nearly fourteen percentage points in 2024, demonstrating the state’s Republican preference.

Paxton’s campaign hopes those underlying partisan fundamentals ultimately outweigh concerns about his candidacy and divisions from the Republican primary.

The attorney general secured his party’s nomination after defeating incumbent Senator John Cornyn in a contentious Republican runoff election.

Some Cornyn supporters remain reluctant to embrace Paxton, creating a consolidation challenge for Republicans during the campaign’s final weeks.

An October Fox News survey found Talarico leading among likely voters, 51 percent to 49 percent, within sampling error.

That survey also identified divisions among Republicans, highlighting the importance of winning back voters from the primary contest.

Still, Paxton maintains strong support among white evangelical Christians, rural voters, and older Texans, according to Fox polling.

Those constituencies have long been essential to Republican victories, especially when statewide races depend heavily on reliable conservative turnout.

Quantus Insights also found Talarico leading independent voters, 52 percent to 37 percent, presenting a significant challenge for Paxton.

Republicans nevertheless see a significant opportunity in consolidating their party’s Texas coalition while persuading undecided voters to support Paxton.

Campaign spending has escalated dramatically as national Republicans recognize the importance of preventing Democrats from capturing this Senate seat.

Breitbart reported that a Senate Leadership Fund-aligned Texas political committee spent $131 million during September, with additional spending anticipated.

That commitment demonstrates how seriously Republican organizations are treating the contest despite Texas’s historically conservative voting patterns.

Recent reporting also identified major contributions from billionaire Elon Musk supporting Republican Senate efforts and outside spending benefiting Paxton.

The substantial financial assistance gives Republicans resources for advertising, voter outreach, and efforts to counter Talarico’s campaign messaging statewide.

However, Democrats have also assembled resources, with Talarico reporting a third-quarter fundraising haul of approximately $64 million.

The scale of spending confirms that neither party regards the Senate contest as safely decided with Election Day approaching rapidly.

Republicans argue Talarico’s progressive positions create vulnerabilities among Texans who favor conservative policies on cultural and economic questions alike.

For Paxton, the latest polling provides welcome evidence that the Republican candidate can compete effectively despite intense Democratic spending.

Leading Republican organizations believe strong conservative voter participation, targeted advertising, and party unity can ultimately preserve the Senate seat.

Early voting begins Monday, October 19, giving campaigns an opportunity to translate their investments into ballots cast.

Election Day falls November 3, when Texas voters will determine whether Paxton or Talarico represents them in the Senate.

For now, Paxton’s new polling leads encourage Republicans across Texas, but the narrow margins demand sustained organization through Election Day.
