For weeks, questions have continued to mount over the condition of one of the Republican Party’s most influential figures, and limited public information has failed to quiet growing speculation.
Now, the calls for greater transparency are no longer coming from just one side of the political aisle, as members of McConnell’s own party publicly say voters deserve more answers.
Two Republican members of Congress have joined Democrats in calling for more information about Sen. Mitch McConnell’s health nearly a month after the Kentucky Republican was hospitalized in Washington, D.C.
McConnell, 84, was admitted to the hospital on June 14, but his office has not disclosed the reason for his hospitalization or provided a timeline for his return to the Senate.
In recent days, McConnell’s staff attempted to reassure the public by releasing statements from Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso and political commentator Scott Jennings, each saying they had spoken with the senator.
Those statements, however, have not ended calls for additional transparency.
Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., argued that Republicans should hold their own leaders to the same standard they applied to former President Joe Biden during the 2024 presidential campaign.
“If McConnell is in as bad a shape as Biden ever was – or worse – he needs to step aside,” Mace wrote in a July 9 post on X.
“This charade can’t continue. We can’t demand of others what we won’t demand of ourselves.”
Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Ind., also compared the situation to concerns surrounding Biden’s health during the 2024 election cycle.
“We are now witnessing a similar scenario on our side, and Republicans should be holding our own party accountable instead of tiptoeing around the truth,” Stutzman wrote on social media.
“Mitch McConnell’s constituents deserve to know where he is at, the fact they don’t is discouraging and concerning.”
“There is too much at stake for America in the Senate not to know.”
According to USA TODAY, Mace and Stutzman are the first Republican elected officials to publicly call for greater transparency regarding McConnell’s condition.
The issue has also renewed debate over how much medical information elected officials should disclose while serving in office.
Earlier this week, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, sent a letter asking McConnell to provide an update directly to Kentuckians, saying the senator’s constituents had “grown increasingly concerned” about his health and ability to continue serving.
McConnell’s office has not publicly responded to the comments from Mace or Stutzman.
Newsmax reporter Jackie Koppell also cited a source who said McConnell remains hospitalized and in rehabilitation.
According to Koppell’s post on X, the source said McConnell is alive, mentally alert and recovering physically, although it remains unclear when he could return to Capitol Hill.
McConnell has faced a series of well-publicized health challenges in recent years.
In 2023, he suffered a concussion and fractured a rib after a fall, followed by two highly publicized episodes in which he briefly froze while speaking in public.
He has also experienced additional falls, increasingly relied on a wheelchair because of lingering effects from childhood polio and was hospitalized earlier this year with what aides described as flu-like symptoms.

His current hospitalization has now extended for several weeks, USA Today reported.
While McConnell’s office continues to say he is improving, it has not disclosed a diagnosis or provided a timetable for his release, leaving questions about the longtime senator’s condition and return to public service unanswered.
