Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in a tense exchange with Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing Tuesday after the Illinois Democrat delivered a lengthy critique of the Trump administration’s State Department budget proposal and attempted to conclude her remarks without giving Rubio an opportunity to respond.
The confrontation unfolded during a hearing focused on the administration’s fiscal year 2027 budget request for the State Department and related foreign policy priorities.

Duckworth used her allotted time to sharply criticize the administration’s proposed funding levels, arguing that the budget would weaken American diplomacy and undermine the State Department’s global mission.
After finishing her remarks, the senator immediately yielded back her time without asking a formal question.
Rubio quickly objected, noting that he had been accused of serious policy failures without being given a chance to address the claims.
“I didn’t get to answer any of that,” Rubio said, pushing back after Duckworth attempted to move on.
Duckworth responded by arguing that she had not asked a question and therefore was not obligated to provide time for a response.

Rubio then appealed directly to committee leadership, asking whether he would be permitted to address the statements that had just been made.
“She doesn’t want me to answer. Can I answer anyway?” Rubio asked. “She made a bunch of points. I get to answer them, right?”
After the committee chairman indicated that Rubio would be allowed to respond, the exchange became increasingly contentious as Duckworth repeatedly interrupted while Rubio attempted to speak.
At one point, the secretary appeared visibly frustrated as the interruptions continued.
“When do I get to talk? Do I get to talk?!” Rubio demanded.
Once he secured the floor, Rubio mounted a forceful defense of both the administration’s foreign policy record and the proposed budget priorities, arguing that critics routinely overlook major diplomatic achievements that have occurred during President Trump’s second term.
Rubio pointed to several recent international developments as evidence that the administration’s approach is producing results despite skepticism from many Democrats and foreign policy critics.
Among the accomplishments he highlighted was the recently signed peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, ending years of conflict between the two neighboring countries.
Rubio also referenced U.S.-supported de-escalation efforts between India and Pakistan, as well as ongoing negotiations involving Lebanon and Israel.
“These are significant diplomatic achievements,” Rubio argued, contending that critics often focus on budget figures while ignoring measurable foreign policy outcomes.

The secretary further rejected suggestions that the administration is dismantling American diplomacy, arguing instead that the State Department is being reoriented toward strategic priorities while remaining capable of delivering results on the world stage.
Rubio also used the moment to remind lawmakers that Congress ultimately controls federal spending decisions.
Addressing concerns raised by committee Democrats, Rubio noted that while the administration proposes budget frameworks and policy priorities, Congress retains constitutional authority over appropriations.
Looking toward Democratic members of the committee, including Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI), Rubio said the administration remains willing to work with lawmakers regarding funding parameters while maintaining its broader policy objectives.
The exchange quickly gained attention online, where supporters of the administration praised Rubio for aggressively defending the administration’s record and refusing to allow Democratic criticism to go unanswered.
