WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — Michigan Democratic Rep. Shri Thanedar has introduced articles of impeachment against U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, accusing her of withholding key documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. Thanedar announced the move on March 9, saying Bondi violated a federal transparency law that required the Justice Department to release all Epstein-related files before a December 2025 deadline.
The resolution, titled “Impeaching Pamela Jo Bondi, Attorney General of the United States of America, for high crimes and misdemeanors,” outlines several charges against the attorney general. Thanedar alleges Bondi obstructed Congress, obstructed justice, and improperly politicized the Department of Justice. The proposal now heads to the House Judiciary Committee, which will review the measure. There is no clear sign that the resolution has enough support in Congress to advance.
Thanedar’s effort focuses on the Justice Department’s handling of documents linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Congress passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act last year with bipartisan support. The law required the Justice Department to disclose all materials related to the Epstein investigation by Dec. 19, 2025.
The Justice Department did release a large amount of information, but it did not meet the original deadline. On Jan. 30, officials released a major batch of records that included more than 3 million pages of documents, about 2,000 videos, and roughly 180,000 images. Thanedar argues that the delay violated the law and undermined transparency. He claims Bondi intentionally withheld files that Congress required the department to make public.
“By illegally withholding millions of Epstein Files after we passed a law requiring her to release all of them ahead of the designated deadline, Pam Bondi has disgraced herself and our country’s entire Justice Department,” Thanedar said in a statement announcing the impeachment articles.
The resolution outlines three main accusations. Thanedar claims Bondi obstructed justice and Congress by failing to release all required records on time. He also accuses her of weaponizing and politicizing the Justice Department. Thanedar tied the allegations to broader concerns about political influence within federal law enforcement. He argued that the handling of the Epstein files raises serious questions about accountability and transparency in government.
“Protecting predators who abused children to appease Donald Trump is the most reprehensible thing that any attorney general has ever done,” Thanedar said. “Her conduct is a spit in the face to survivors everywhere, and we cannot allow it to continue.”
Bondi has not publicly responded to Thanedar’s impeachment resolution.
The dispute over the Epstein files has also drawn attention from other lawmakers. The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee voted Wednesday to subpoena Bondi as part of its investigation into the document release process. Lawmakers from both parties supported legislation last fall that required the Justice Department to disclose all materials tied to the Epstein investigation. Congress said the move aimed to increase transparency and provide answers to victims and the public.
While millions of documents have already been released, critics argue the staggered rollout raises concerns about whether the department complied fully with the law. Thanedar framed his impeachment effort as part of a broader push to defend congressional oversight and ensure justice for abuse survivors.
Despite the strong language in the resolution, the impeachment effort faces significant political obstacles. Articles of impeachment must pass the House before the Senate can hold a trial. That process usually requires strong backing from party leadership and broad support from lawmakers.
So far, there is little indication that Thanedar’s proposal has gathered enough support to move forward. Thanedar represents Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, which includes Detroit, several Downriver communities, and the Grosse Pointes. He won the seat in the 2024 election cycle.
This is not the first time he has used impeachment as a political tool. In December 2025, Thanedar introduced articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Earlier in April 2025, he filed seven impeachment articles against President Donald Trump. He later withdrew that effort about a month later. Even so, Thanedar says his current resolution sends a clear message about accountability and transparency in government.
“The American people deserve the truth,” he said. “Congress must ensure that no official stands above the law.”
