Mark Carney has picked a trade fight with the one customer Canada can’t come close to replacing.
That’s basically the whole story in a nutshell underneath all the tariffs, speeches, threats, chest-thumping, and “elbows up” TDS bravado coming out of Ottawa.
The numbers tell the grim story for Mark Carney.
In 2025, the United States bought about $403.7 billion worth of Canadian goods.
Canada’s second-largest export market, the United Kingdom, bought about $33.3 billion.
China bought $24.6 billion.
As you can see, for Canada, the US is an economic Grand Canyon.
America buys more than twelve times as much Canadian merchandise as Canada’s second-biggest customer and about sixteen times as much as China.
A trade war with the US spells absolute disaster for Canada. Of course, there are consequences for America in a trade war too. Our two economies are very connected, especially when it comes to cars, energy, steel, agriculture, and manufacturing.
But nobody looking at the numbers can seriously pretend the disaster is equal.
Canada needs access to American consumers way more than America needs access to Canadians.
And that’s what makes Carney’s bizarre strategy such a stupid gamble.
He says Washington demanded too much and that Canada had to protect its sovereignty. Fine. Canadians can decide whether they buy that argument. But pride and Trump-hate doesn’t create another $400 billion in customers, sir.
At some point, the ol’ “elbows up” stops being a cute slogan and becomes a devastating problem that Canadians will have to pay with lost jobs, weak businesses, and soaring high prices.
One viral post shows the wild imbalance in a way anybody can understand.
The chart attached to the X post is pretty much comical.
The United States sits very comfy at the top, followed by everybody else a billion floors below.
But Ottawa keeps flapping their gums as if Canada can just redirect its business somewhere else if relations with the US go bad.
The math disagrees, Mark. Trump holds the cards.

This is the ugly “death march” Carney is waltzing into.
And Canada can dislike Trump, detest his negotiating style, and dream about new trading partners all it wants. But none of those things replace its biggest customer.
And according to one account of the negotiations, Canada had a chance to dramatically lower some of the tariffs already squeezing its biggest industries.
Then Carney walked.
The US and Canada were actually close to a deal before negotiations went south.
The offer included a lot of relief for Canadian steel and automobiles, two industries with a lot of exposure to the American market.
Carney says the final American demands were unfair and unacceptable. Of course we tell a very different story that that Canada walked away from some really favorable terms.

Canadian Prime Minister and WEF globalist Mark Carney has been a disaster for Canada since he entered office. There were many critics who believed the Trudeau regime could not be topped in terms of self destructive behavior, but one could easily argue that Carney is far more dangerous and far more devious.
This week the Canadian government abandoned a nearly finalized trade deal with the US in the final hour of talks, leaving many analysts (and Canadians) bewildered. According to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and related reports on the negotiations, the U.S. offered significant tariff reductions that would have given Canada preferential treatment relative to other major exporters.The offer included a reduction of tariffs on steel from 50% to 25%, a reduction on Canadian autos from 25% to 15%, a removal of the 10% tariff on Canadian lumber and cooperation on numerous other measures, representing the best deal offered in comparison to any other country which relies on heavily US markets. Carney abruptly ordered negotiators to walk away, claiming the deal was “not good enough”, and declared further retaliation against the US.
And now Canada has made another stupid move. They’re retaliating.
Sure, Mark’s “tough guy” routine might play well politically while everyone’s angry and waving flags, but economics has a nasty little habit of crashing the party. Hard.
Carney is asking Canadians to accept the brutal pain of a trade war because he thinks refusing Trump’s terms is some noble move and worth the price. A price he won’t pay, mind you… the average people beneath him deal with that mess.
Carney’s selling the confrontation as some righteous defense of Canada.
Canada now has a prime minister telling them that economic pain is their patriotic duty.

Sure, national pride can carry a government for a while during a fight with an unpopular foreign leader.
But it gets a lot harder when factories start cutting shifts and families notice that everything costs more.
And while all of this chest-thumping is going on, keep in mind that this dependence on America isn’t some problem created by Trump.
It’s built into the Canadian economic model.
Canada’s spent decades benefiting from privileged access to the massive American market while also creating policies that weaken its own ability to stand independently.

Because of the Canadian government’s censorship/propaganda machine, most Canadian citizens have no idea how economically vulnerable their British vassal state really is. Carney’s public memorandum makes it sound as if Canada’s economy is the envy of the world, when it is nothing more than a plaything for Chinese smugglers and European bankers who use the country as an entry point into U.S. markets.
The average Canadian is about to learn how dependent Canada has always been upon the unreciprocated generosity of the United States.
Canada is a weigh station for moving products into the United States. Its value for other nations lies in its uniquely favorable trade agreements with the U.S. Canadian banks and manufacturers act as middlemen for foreign nations skirting American trade laws. For its trade- and money-laundering services, Canada receives a cut of the profits.
China takes advantage of this arrangement by “snow-washing” their goods through Canadian shell corporations and hiding their commercial transactions within Canadian financial institutions. Over the decades, this “Trojan horse” operation — in which American adversaries use Canada as an economic workaround for hollowing out vital American industries — has greatly profited our neighbors up North.
In fact, the leftist-globalists running Canada have been able to generate enough revenue by stamping Chinese products, “Made in Canada,” that they have become emboldened to get on their “global warming” high horse and lecture the United States about the imaginary “climate apocalypse.” Even though the U.S. has actually reduced its so-called “climate emissions” by a larger percentage than Canada over the last twenty-five years (a feat accomplished through industrial innovation), the Canadian government pretends that the country’s poorly managed forest fires are the outcome of U.S. capitalism. (This is akin to blaming Thor for thunder.)
While sitting on some of the largest energy reserves on the entire planet, Canada has insisted upon throttling its own hydrocarbon output in the name of “fighting global warming.” By waging war against its own energy industry, Canada makes itself economically and militarily vulnerable.
Canada has great resources, good people, and plenty of options for building a stronger economy.
But what they don’t have is another United States sitting on its border.
This is what makes this standoff look like a death march. Because Trump doesn’t need Canada to surrender tomorrow. He can just sit it around and wait and let the numbers do the negotiating for him.
