One of the most polarizing former hosts in daytime television history is preparing to return to the show that largely defined her career.
The announcement has renewed interest in a relationship marked by headline-making confrontations, abrupt departures and years of public speculation about behind-the-scenes tensions.

The planned appearance comes as the long-running program prepares to celebrate a major milestone by bringing together familiar faces from its past.
For many viewers, the reunion is expected to revisit some of the show’s most memorable and controversial moments.

Former “The View” co-host Rosie O’Donnell confirmed this week that she will return for the program’s upcoming 30th anniversary celebration, marking her first appearance on the ABC daytime talk show since leaving as a panelist more than a decade ago.
Speaking on the podcast “The Tangle,” O’Donnell said she plans to participate in the anniversary special in whatever capacity the show’s producers request.

“I will go on the 30th anniversary next year and be on in whatever way they want me, just as a guest,” O’Donnell said.
She added that she believes producers intend to invite back many of the program’s former hosts as part of the anniversary celebration.
“They’re bringing back all the hosts, I think, for the 30th season,” O’Donnell said. “And I’m pretty proud of that show, what it’s become and how it really speaks to the people and to politics, and that was not the case when I first joined.”
O’Donnell first joined “The View” in 2006 after replacing longtime moderator Meredith Vieira and quickly became one of the show’s most talked-about personalities because of her outspoken style and frequent political commentary.
Her tenure included a series of on-air clashes with conservative co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, whose political views often sharply contrasted with O’Donnell’s positions.
Their disagreements reached a breaking point in 2007 during a heated exchange over the Iraq War that ended with O’Donnell leaving the program several weeks before her contract was scheduled to expire.
Reflecting on those disputes at the time, O’Donnell said she no longer wanted to continue engaging in public confrontations that she believed were being portrayed unfairly in media coverage.
After spending several years away from the program, O’Donnell returned to “The View” in 2014 for a second stint that also lasted only one season.

During that return, reports circulated that she had developed a strained relationship with co-host Whoopi Goldberg, rumors that O’Donnell addressed during her recent podcast interview.
“I had a sort of a tense time with Whoopi,” O’Donnell said, while also describing Goldberg as “somebody I admire.”
O’Donnell explained that she had hoped the two would develop a collaborative on-air partnership but said those expectations did not materialize.

“I expected that we would be like Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan, passing the ball back and forth and then shooting and leading the team to victory,” she said. “But that’s not exactly what happened.”
She speculated that Goldberg may have felt she was “encroaching” on her role, although O’Donnell said that had never been her intention.
O’Donnell also recalled one incident in which she believed tension increased after she sent the program to a commercial break while Goldberg was still speaking.
Outside of “The View,” O’Donnell recently relocated to Ireland, saying earlier this year that she chose to leave the United States following President Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

Before appearing on the anniversary special, O’Donnell is also scheduled to return to American television later this month as a guest host on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” while Jimmy Kimmel is away on his summer break, The Daily Mail reported.
Although the anniversary special is expected to reunite numerous former hosts, O’Donnell’s return is likely to attract particular attention given her history of high-profile disagreements and dramatic exits, making her appearance one of the most anticipated moments of “The View’s” 30th anniversary celebration.
