Since returning to the White House on January 20, President Donald Trump has made a concerted effort to fill the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) with MAGA loyalists. Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is now U.S. attorney general, and far-right Kash Patel is now FBI director.
During a Saturday morning, March 8 appearance on MSNBC, former federal prosecutor Andrew Weissmann — who served as general counsel to the FBI under President Barack Obama — discussed Trump’s efforts to give DOJ a total MAGA makeover. And he warned that Trump is hurting DOJ considerably.
Weissmann, talking to MSNBC hosts Michael Steele, Symone Sanders and Alicia Menendez, said of Trump and his allies, “You’re decimating people who you think will not be loyalists…. It’s scorched earth.”

The former federal prosecutor warned that DOJ and FBI employees who are not full-fledged Trump loyalists are at risk of being fired. And he isn’t optimistic that the lower federal courts will be able to do enough to rein Trump in.
“The courts are not the answer,” Weissmann told Steele, Sanders and Menendez. “They are part of the answer.”
The MAGA movement, Weissmann said, is making a “full-on assault” on the rule of law and is even making “an effort to take over bar associations.”
Weissmann observed, “People are appalled….. You do not attack people for simply doing their job.”
