Former Vice President Kamala Harris is once again fueling speculation about the party’s future with a series of remarks that could reshape the conversation ahead of the next presidential election.
Her comments immediately sparked renewed debate over how far the party may be willing to go on several long-contested issues.

The speech also raised fresh questions about whether positions that once seemed politically risky are becoming more mainstream within Democratic politics.
While no formal campaign has been announced, the timing of the remarks is likely to intensify attention on the 2028 presidential race.

Harris has now called for revisiting the Electoral College, expanding the U.S. Supreme Court, and considering statehood for both Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., during remarks at the National Urban League Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.
“I know this is going to be controversial coming from me, in particular,” Harris said before outlining several proposals that she suggested deserve renewed consideration.

“We need to revisit the Electoral College. We need to revisit the point of expanding the court, to 13 justices like we have 13 district courts. We need to revisit, if they so want, statehood for Puerto Rico and D.C.,” Harris said.
The remarks represent a departure from some of the positions Harris publicly embraced during her 2024 presidential campaign, when she did not advocate abolishing the Electoral College and instead supported Supreme Court term limits and a binding ethics code for justices rather than expanding the court.
Harris also endorsed statehood for Washington, D.C., during her 2024 campaign but had not publicly backed statehood for Puerto Rico as part of that platform.
Critics pointed out that Democrats like her always want to change the rules when they lose elections.
During her speech, Harris also called for greater accountability for federal judicial nominees, arguing that nominees who intentionally mislead the Senate Judiciary Committee should face consequences, including rules that would allow the committee to hold them in contempt of Congress.
The comments come as speculation continues about whether Harris will seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028 following her loss to President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.
According to Axios, Harris has recently spoken with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani about the future of the Democratic Party and held a separate meeting earlier this year with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Chicago.
Those conversations have drawn attention as Democratic leaders and activists continue debating the party’s direction heading into the next presidential election cycle.

Despite the growing speculation, Harris said she has not yet decided whether she will launch another White House campaign.
‘I have not made a decision,’ Harris told attendees, adding that she is ‘fully, sincerely, focused on these midterms.’
Recent polling compiled by RealClearPolitics has shown Harris leading early Democratic primary surveys over several potential contenders, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Any effort to abolish the Electoral College or expand the Supreme Court would face major legal and political challenges, making it unlikely to advance without broad congressional support and, in the case of the Electoral College, possibly a constitutional amendment.
Harris’ remarks are expected to add to the ongoing debate over the future direction of the Democratic Party while keeping attention focused on her political plans as Democrats prepare for the 2028 presidential election.
Liberal New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg sharply criticized the Democratic National Committee’s long-delayed 2024 election postmortem on Friday, describing the report as “mysterious,” “anticlimactic,” and “ridiculous” following months of internal Democratic infighting surrounding its release.
“The document, it’s now clear, was kept under wraps not because it was impolitic, but because it’s a disaster,” Goldberg wrote.

She also criticized DNC Chairman Ken Martin for changing his position on the report.
“What’s most striking is its utter lack of substance,” she noted further, adding that the words “Israel” and “Gaza” don’t appear anywhere in the 192-page autopsy.
