White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt took questions from children in the briefing room on Tuesday, where one perceptive child asked an otherwise mundane question about President Donald Trump that contained an amusing qualifier.
The gathering was part of “Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day,” where reporters’ children got ask questions during a briefing.
The child in question, Norah, inquired as to Trump’s favorite president, but made clear she wanted a answer from Leavitt that was not “Donald Trump.” Notably, Leavitt admitted that Trump is “probably” Trump’s favorite president:
LEAVITT: Norah, go ahead.
NORAH: Which is Donald Trump’s favorite president – besides himself?
[LAUGHTER]
LEAVITT: That’s a good question, because it would be – uh, probably – himself. I think that perhaps he would say George Washington. I know he speaks very highly of George Washington, who was, of course, the first president of our great country. And he has his big, beautiful portrait hanging in the Oval Office above the fireplace. Good question.
Another young girl asked Leavitt, “How many people has he fired?”
“Thus far, actually, we’ve not had anyone fired, with the exception of one individual who did leave their job, but we have a great team here,” Leavitt responded, despite the fact that tens of thousands of federal employees have been laid off since Trump took office. It is unclear who Leavitt’s “exception” is.
Elsewhere during the briefing, Leavitt declined to answer a question asking who Trump’s favorite child is.
“That is a very controversial question and I am not going to answer it,” she replied. “He loves all of his children very much, and they’re all great kids. Some of them were here yesterday.”
