WASHINGTON (TNND) — Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) head Elon Musk on Monday sounded the alarm over what he described as “magic money computers” creating waste in the federal government.
The remarks made on the Verdict podcast with Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, come amid DOGE’s aggressive audit of the federal government. Musk said his team has uncovered computer systems which
“You may think that the government computers all talk to each other, they’re synchronized, they add up what funds are going where and it’s coherent and that the numbers you’re presented as a senator are the real numbers,” he said.
“One would think,” Sen. Cruz said.
“I call a magic money computer any computer which can just make money out of thin air,” Musk said. “It just issues payments.”
These computers, Musk added, can create money and send it anywhere. He claimed 14 such computers are currently active in the federal government.
He decried the computers as “maybe the biggest scam of all time” in a post shared via X.
“Can a person buy a magic money computer on eBay” Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, asked. “Asking for a friend.”
The finding comes as Doge continues to identify ways to cut government spending. DOGE announced last week it had canceled 239 “wasteful” contracts within government agencies. It estimated these contracts to be worth as much as $1.7 billion.
Among the canceled programs was $699,000 for studying “cannabis use” among “sexual minority gender diverse individuals” and $740,000 for examining “social networks” among “black and Latino sexual minority men in New Jersey.”
