The Trump administration has made significant strides in locating tens of thousands of unaccounted-for migrant children, with nearly 80,000 reportedly found from a pool of over 320,000 missing under the Biden administration. This revelation follows a damning August 2024 report from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General, which exposed serious lapses in tracking unaccompanied migrant children after their release from federal custody.
The DHS report highlighted alarming statistics: 291,000 children were released without being issued Notices to Appear or placed in removal proceedings, while 32,000 failed to show up for court dates and remain unaccounted for. These children are at heightened risk of trafficking, exploitation, and forced labor, the report warned.
Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner reported that the Trump administration began addressing the issue prior to the election, recovering between 75,000 and 80,000 children within the first days of Trump’s return to office. “What was Secretary of Homeland Security, Mayorkas, doing when he said to the committees on Capitol Hill, ‘We don’t know where those kids are’?” Faulkner questioned during her broadcast.
